If Sengun gets more minutes, where do they come from?

  1. Play him with Wood, figure out how to make two bigs work

    30.7%
  2. Take minutes away from Wood, more Sengun at the 5 with no other big

    19 vote(s)
    18.8%
  3. A combination of the two options above

    43 vote(s)
    42.6%
  4. I don't think he needs more minutes

averaging 18.6 minutes this season. Maybe get him up to 25 range but he's a teenager, I'd just about assume he doesn't have the conditioning to play 30+ minutes a game.

You can play wood and sengun together. Don’t overthink this.

Tate is part of the problem because he can’t shoot. I want Sengun and Green as the main players. Everyone else job is to make these two shine brighter. I also think that Garuba & Martin is are key in our future. We need a way to make ALL these players better as a team. The offense needs to change and some of the the players that are getting playing time need to go. The development of our key players is the goal for this year.

With a different offense where Sengun is the trigger-man makes Wall more than playable, too. Shooting and defense and some play making is a fit for the whole TEAM.

In that ball park yes, but I do not see teams giving up a promising young player for him.

A modern day Ilyasova......somewhere close to 30 years of age.

You have to comprehend that if the opponent GM is smart, he would lowball the hell out of this.

And only Houston values him the highest.

I dunno. We just gotta see in a month or two what teams are going to believe their window is now and who thinks they need guard help now. I doubt there will be that many Eric Gordon’s available. It only takes two teams and you never know. I think the Warriors are a team that might think it’s now or never. Phoenix too. Philly definitely looks in need. We just have to wait and see. A future highly protected first I think is realistic. But it’ll be a first from a good team so not a pick like the Lowry Toronto pick.

But the good news is it’ll likely be a win now team who’ll want to give a 2022 pick since it’ll have lower value, and thats good for us since we need as many picks as we can get in 22 or better yet 23 regardless if they are lottery or late 1st. We need more Sengun types who have tons of value to help build a team of competent young players around both Green and our 2022 draft which IMO is the most consequential player in the Rockets future. The stakes couldn’t be higher for that kid especially since Green looks like he might “just” be good but likely not a superstar.

The point is Eric Gordon might be our best chance at snagging a good late 1st so we can get another good young player. And the more Gordon is showcased in the next 45 days the better chances are we’ll get a good pick.

The more Wood and House are showcased the worse it’ll be for whatever we can get for them probably.

That is you thinking Klay is coming back as a semi bum......

I hear you but I am not as high on him as some of you are.

To get it going right before the Playoffs and for a new team, that is not easy.

And we have been through the worst of Ego's shooting slumps. Lost athleticism on his way.

Sengun must play 30+ minutes. Everyone else can fall into place. He is our best player. Not close.

They would come from the rotation that Silas makes out of the 240 available minutes.

Don't know. But somehow Chet reminds me of Shawn Bradley.

A developing team should be 100% meritocracy. If you play well, you get minutes. If you don't (Wood) you lose minutes. You can earn them back, etc. I don't understand coaches on developing teams that get stuck to the same rotation for 3-5 game losing streaks. I would say option 2, mostly. But also less Theis minutes, for sure.

The G League? I honestly would love to watch him go score 50 a night down there.

Now that we’re valuing spacing and avoiding two big lineups, which do you think is the more likely path for Alperen Şengün to get more minutes:

    1) Şengün outplays Christian Wood, especially on the defensive end, and earns more playing time?
    2) Stephen Silas experiments with some Şengün-Wood lineups, especially against bigger teams? — Siddharth K.

Ah. The Alperen Şengün mob, live and direct. I salute the support.

Well, let’s start with the obvious: Wood is playing out of his mind right now — on both ends of the floor. The Rockets have won three straight and look vastly different than what we saw from them earlier in the season. Typically speaking, coaching staffs don’t like to mess with what’s working — a big reason why you’ve seen Daniel Theis glued to the bench during this stretch despite their original intentions for him.

Rockets fans have been calling for Şengün to start for a while, but if you look at how Houston has been playing and why it’s been winning, it’s one thing: The spacing has been excellent. Garrison Mathews and Armoni Brooks have given Kevin Porter Jr. more lanes to operate. They’ve given Wood more room to roam and cause havoc. As a result, the Rockets have been able to string some wins together and get their morale up.

Dual big lineups seem outdated. Theis and Wood were just awful together (getting outscored by nearly 22 points per 100 possessions in 295 minutes this season, per Second Spectrum), but Şengün and Wood aren’t that much better. That combo is a minus-11.6 together. Yes, Şengün is a young Turkish wizard and should be on the floor often, but the best version of Wood involves him occupying areas of the floor Şengün thrives in as well, albeit by different actions. You just can’t mix the two right now, not when Wood is thriving as the lone big stretching the floor like he is.

Şengün and Wood are just better served continuing in the staggered role they appear to be in now. Şengün’s 17-to-22-ish minutes a night have him playing against both second and first units, and he’s looked comfortable in either role. But honestly, with the way the Rockets are playing, I’m not even sure they would revert back to dual big lineups against teams that necessitated it. The reason for that is Wood just looks amazing at the five, and playing another big means pushing Jae’Sean Tate down to the small forward slot — and he’s much better served at the four.

Şengün is in a good spot. He has the trust of the coaching staff and players, and he’s on the floor a decent amount. The season is long. There will come a time this year where his minutes are ramped up. You all just have to be patient and enjoy some exciting, winning Rockets basketball while you can.

So, to answer your question, I would lean towards the second option, just for the sake of general rebuild, “screw it, let’s do it” stuff. But I think Şengün is staying in that current game-time slot.

I don't really understand the people who think that unless Sengun gets 23 minutes and not 19 minutes a major crime against humanity is being committed.

Guy fouls a ton and tires quickly, is 19, is playing in the most difficult league in the world, has never come close to playing an 82 game season. and is playing the one slot where the Rockets, now that Wood is out of his funk, have a better alternative.

he played 800 minutes last year in his domestic league in the entire season. He's up to 350 and the NBA season is not even 1/4 done. He'll probably end up with close to twice as many as he did last year.

    That is on schedule.

i was a big proponent of getting him more minutes but with the changes i'm content with how he's being handled now.

if Wood gets in foul trouble ALP will be in for a big night. Otherwise he gets a nice 20 min against bench units to experiment with his craft.

I can absolutely see this point. I’m fine with 20-25 minutes and let him get into NBA shape.
I think the issue is the hypocrisy of the coaching staff. Green playing extreme minutes when his play has been spotty at best and hasn’t played even near the minutes Sengun has professionally.
