What happens then? http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/post/_/id/46890/hawks-resisting-interest-in-smith-for-now
Yeah, a trade like this one is probably likely, and is a very scary thought. It makes sense for both teams, but really helps the Lakers.
There's no reason to keep Josh Smith for Atlanta, they are way over the cap and stuck in a perpetual state of not being bad enough (like they were), yet never been good enough to contend. If they cannot trade for Gasol, then they need to trade Josh Smith for some picks or a versatile wingman.
Whenever I read Josh Smith's name, I keep remembering when he put that tape down in that dunk contest, which got everyone really excited.
Surely the Hawks wouldn't trade Horford. He's the one asset on their squad who's worth his contract. The only way I see Horford moving is if Joe Johnson goes with him.
Would the Lakers consider this if Atlanta throws in a first round pick? The Hawks could then amnesty Johnson and build around their big men.
I AGREE TO the power of 50. If they need use their amnesty on anyone, it should be Joe Johnson, but their management doesn't want to pay him that sum of money (they're a frugal bunch). Even though, it gives WAY MORE flexibility in the cap and drops them nearly $18 million under the cap, even after a trade for Gasol (with Smith and possibly other pieces) that only drops to about $11 million over. Gasol is off the books in two seasons, and unlike Joe Johnson, he won't be taking up over half of the teams scheduled salary.
Understandable Though, he is far from being the worst player in the world. Though, he's another one of those infamous tweeners who are hard to put in certain spot. Still, he works very well next to a good presence center. Which is why I think LA should give it a consideration and try to build a team that can compete with likes of the Heat and Thunder, athletically.
I don't trust Atlanta's front office. And for some reason, the Lakers are always able to pull Jedi mind tricks on the other GMs in the NBA.
Sadly, the Lakers could end with promising player, tonight and not give up Gasol or get really good players back in return with draft picks. I don't know how they pull some of those trades off over the years.
