His brother would indeed be an exciting change... ...but I don't think that would really work out - the holidays would be a little tough around the old Van Gundy house.
You know something, not everyone get their knowledge like you, by sitting at your corner, read the stats or bios. I was a Bulls fan since 1987 when I went to school in Illinois, only stopped following them after moving to the West Coast 10 years ago. I always liked Doug, but he was not a good coach. A good commentator may be, but not a good coach. Doug can talk like nobody's business, he is a very emotional guy, but very unstable as a coach. Everywhere he has been, he got a few months honeymoon, then everything turns ugly. He was let go by the Bulls because he couldn't handle the players in his last season, that team did went to the conference final, but had no hope to beat the Pistons. The next year with Jackson as the coach, the Bulls won every home game against the Pistons in the conference final, should have won one game in Piston if not for Rodman's act against Pippen. I didn't say Jackson is the savor, or anything like that, but just pointed out the factor that the guy did coach a team full of young talent, not like public perception that he only coached teams with veteran stars. Stars won't win you title, Jackson's last LA team should have told us that lesson. I believe JVG is just an average coach. But his two years with the Rockets cannot prove anything due to circumstances we have, e.g., the turn over of the players, the injuries. So I think we should let the guy prove himself next year when we have a healthy team.
For next year, we have as much chance of getting Phil Jackson as the Lakers have in getting Yao Ming. Not happening. Kenny Smith? Mario Elie? What have they done as coaches? Again. Not happening. We have the two of the best players in the league, we're not going to get rid of JVG in favor of two guys that haven't proven anything. Kenny Smith hasn't even been an assistant coach. Adelman I think would be interesting, but the Kings would probably have to fire him and with the way they've been playing I don't know how likely that is. If we're gonna fire Gundy we need an upgrade and right now it's looking good.
Now were talking, I love the idea of Musselman coaching this team. He is a young energetic coach that actually knows the game. And he would bring some passion to this team. Van Grumpy is always talking about the players lacking passion but he's the most emotionless guy I've ever seen. That being said I think JVG will get a pass on the season.
21-10 with a healthy lineup. And no Bob Sura Kenny Smith???? You guys need to lay off the pipe. Elie???? Maybe, but c'mon Adelman...never won a thing with a much more talented roster than we have Big Chief Triangle? Well, maybe, but he's not leaving LA Not even Phil could coach this team right now and beat Western teams. We don't have enough healthy, productive players. We have no one that can consistently hit an open 3 point shot, which kills you when you focus your offense on a center.
The problem with Eric Musselman is that when he was the Head Coach he was so full of tension and it shows and even can rub off on his players.Such high tension and resulting stress might effect his decission making!! I wonder why was he let go from his last Head Coaching position. He seems to be much calmer in his present role of assistant. His father died well before his time.
Calling Mr. Van Gundy...Mr. Van Gundy to the courtesy telephone. Mario Elie has proven just as much in the position as the current head coach of the Rockets. I'd say more, because he has been a winner (as a player).
How about the pacer coach? Rick Carlisle? He has done a lot with very very limited talent due to many factors beyond his control.
Well spoken. Though I am a little uncomfortable now with JVG, I think you make a very valid point - no coach (from the names bandied so far) could have done noticeably better than what JVG had to work with this season. But I will like to add that I want to see JVG less and less involved with player personel - he has not done well with the kind of players he has [I believe] made CD bring in so far (save for T-MAC which was a no-brainer). We need to tweak how we assess players a little so that we can hopefully land a few dynamic players that have a descent shot (maybe the poor shooting have something to do with the constant lineup changes and injury layoffs).
i would give my vote to this guy too, man has he had to deal with diversity. with all that bs surrounding him in indiana he still has gotten his team to the playoffs on a consistent basis
Guy, I don't want to come down on you too hard, but you obviously know nothing about the dynamics of those Bulls teams. Give it up. PJ was instrumental in them winning championships no matter how much you try to downplay it. There were good reasons Collins was shoved out the door and PJ was promoted. PJ taking over was like a breath of fresh air and they won 6 championships. Not only that, PJ went to LA and took an entirely different kind of team to 3 straight championships. To say "Jordan and co did not have to be coached just adjusted and twigged into a world championship team" is just dumb. The more you comment on this the more it's obvious you have no clue about it. Did you ever see them play and watch them methodically destroy teams? Jordan didn't create the triangle offense nor did he draw up their incredible defensive schemes. If some of you think I'm being too harsh, please forgive me. Just couldn't let this one slip by. I don't want to derail the thread.
