I would try to add something to this discussion but pretty much everything that needs to be said has been. Kobe is going down as an all-time great but winning a title this season doesn't move him past MJ, Wilt or Russell. Seriously advise reading about the NBA before the 2000s.

Because .... Kobe's a rat ba$tard .... Jordan didn't have to run his mouth like Kobe does .... and oh .... he didn't have to force a girl to do anything.

i find that people automatically give the crown to michael. he's up there, but there are other players that most fans have forgotten about.

my list looks something like this:
    1. kareem - scored more points than michael and has more championships.
    2. mike
    3. magic - 5 rings, played all 5 positions. point guard, point forward, and even point center in the finals as a rookie.
    4. wilt - maybe the single greatest athlete ever. most dominant basketball player ever. if he one a few more rings we would be the undisputed #1 on everyones list.
    5. oscar - averaged a tripple double!

the next few would be (in no order) russell, shaq, hakeem, bird, kobe, duncan. in all honesty, kobe may not even finish his career in the top 10. he's definitely not top 5.

Is that the justification? Because Kobe hasnt won a ring without a big man? So Magic wasn't worthy of his greatness, being that his big man was arguably the greatest big man ever. Yall are grasping at straws at this pont

Tim Duncan got four rings before Shaq and Kobe.

I imagine 95% of this thread to be non basketball related rebuttals. The media seems to be build these picture perfect athletes and overhype them. He's not saint, but what bring his case?? Especially when he was found innocent

Hakeem would've dream shaked Kobe into oblivion.

..then have a milkshake party at his backyard.

Not even close Kobe fanboi. Jordan, Magic, Hakeem, Shaq, Kareem, Wilt just a few that are above him. I might even put Duncan ahead of him.

Kobe's had the luxury of playing with some of the most talented teams around him and not to mention the league bias in favor of the mighty fakers.

Why does it matter? It seems you have no logical rebuttal. Answer is, OLDER THAN YOU

Very funny. Kobe played second fiddle to the Shaq-led Fakers. Magic was the single main piece of those championships they won in the 80's. The Rapist is not even the greatest Faker of all time (MJ, Kareem, Shaq, Wilt...)

Substitute Kobe with Carter, Tmac, Grant Hill or a number of elite wing players of the early part of this decade and chances are the Fakers still win a number of those championships cause of Shaq.

Substitute Shaq with any other dominant center (don't think there were any) and they don't win jack.

Elaborate on this..Nobody on the current Lakers is going to the hall of fame
They aren't even the most talented team THIS YEAR. Where exactly is the luxury?

Grasping at straws? You haven't provided a single argument as to why Kobe is the greatest other than having the courage to continue to be paid tens of millions of dollars while on trial for rape.

What do you think makes Kobe the best?

Championships? Has 4 (5 if you are playing your hypothetical). Jordan had 6. Russell had 11.

Finals MVPs? Kobe only has one out of 4. And I'll bet that with the way Pau is playing if your scenario plays out he'll be the one hoisting that trophy.

NBA MVPs? Just one, and that's all he's gonna get. Jordan had 5. FIVE.

Defensive? Defensive player of the year ever? Nope. Jordan was though.

General statistical achievement? He won't lead any categories by the time he retires.

Clutchness/Intangibles? While Kobe has it in spades, it's certainly not any more so than Jordan. I don't hold it against him, but Kobe has been to the finals twice and lost and turned in some pretty putrid performances in both those series, especially Detroit.

I don't even need to make the argument that Jordan is the greatest, because all you need to know is that Kobe< Jordan.

Look at the achievements of MJ:

    6-time NBA Champion
    6-time NBA Finals MVP
    5-time NBA MVP
    7-time The Sporting News MVP
    10 NBA Scoring Titles
    3-time steals leader
    14 NBA All-Star Selections
    3-time NBA All-Star Game MVP
    11 All-NBA Selections
    9 All-Defensive First Team Selections
    2-time NBA Slam Dunk Contest Champion – 1987, 1988
NBA Rookie of the Year – 1984

Tell me how Kobe has surpassed Jordan in any aspect of the game. I'll be impressed if you can even name a single thing.

It matters because you probably haven't seen Jordan play. And like any young person, you assume whatever is happening now is the most important/best thing since sliced bread.

Go back and watch how Jordan DOMINATES the game on a daily basis, that'll make you realize that so far he's head and shoulder above EVERYONE else.

    Because Micheal Jordan has:
    • 6 Championship ....
    • 5 Regular Season MVP's ....
    • 6 Final's MVP's ....
    • 10 Scoring Titles ....
    • 10 All-NBA 1st Team ....
    • 9 All-Defensive 1st Team ....
    • 3 Time Steals leader ....
    • Defensive player of the year in 1987-88

Robert Horry won 7 championships. He won multiple championships with 3 different cores. So explain why he isn't the best player in the game? Simple. Other players did more for their team, and did it better.

That answers your question as well.

Second fiddle? U aren't being realistic and letting ur emotions control ur opinion. Shaq was the 1st option, but Kobe was still closing games in the 4th quarters while shaq either was A. in foul trouble or B. missing free throws, being a non factor

You are right, the Fakers outside of Gasol, Bynum, Odom, and Artest have no talent.

Gasol is probably borderline HOF if they win this year.

How the hell aren't they the most talented team this year?

Substitute the Rapist with Lebron or Wade and they are better. Substitute the Rapist with Durant or Carmelo and they probably still just as good.
