If Kobe Bryant is amnestied, should Rockets make an offer?

So, how the Amnesty works is, lowest-highest win total gets bids, as long as they r under the cap. Then, if no one bids, the teams above the cap get to bid. I believe the max bid is either 3 or 5 mil, and the bid amount counts towards your salary for the remainder of his original contract's length. I'd bid, easily, and I'd bank on Kobe wanting to stick it to the lake show and Mr. Jim Buss

That was from the morning after his injury.

Would have been kinda mean spirited to start filling out the amnesty paperwork while Kobe is writhing on the ground in pain.

    Just a few points:

If a team bids on an amnestied player then they have to use cap room to cover the amount.

Kobe could be amnestied tomorrow and the Rockets wouldn't burn any cap room on him. They need more cap space in order to be able to offer dh12 the max. Hopefully after free Agency we have no cap space because we used it to sign Howard.

Teams like Chicago and NYK are way over the cap so they wouldn't be in a position to bid on Kobe.

LA will likely have a ton of cap space in '14 so they wouldn't need Bird rights if they wanted to sign Kobe.

Likewise, lots of teams will have cap space in '14 so having Kobe's bird rights doesn't give you that much of an advantage unless you plan on paying him on excess of $30m/season like he currently makes.

Scola comes nowhere near the legacy of Kobe Bryant at all, BUT considering teams partied ways with Joe Montana, Johnny Unitas, Peyton Manning, Brian Urlacher, Greg Maddux, Barry Bonds, Emmitt Smith, Shaquille O'Neal (isn't it ironic), and the list continues to grow..

The NBA is a BUSINESS, as is every other professional sport , if the Lakers amnestied Kobe it would make them much more competitive in the long run, and they could fairly easy build a contender with free agent signings and develop draft picks in the future, like teams are supposed to do.

Again, what is so special about Kobe versus other all-time greats? Moreover, Kobe would still earn his yearly salary for this season, while he could easily resign with the Lakers for a lesser salary.

Even more so, a Kobe amnesty would give the Lakers a better chance of keeping Dwight Howard, because the Lakers could actually put some pieces around him for next season and 2014.

Names, such as John Wall, Paul George, David West, Monta Ellis, Are these players as good as Kobe? Hell no, but the Lakers could add more long-term flexibility and competitiveness.

It's very much the suicidal PR move that could save the franchise from bottoming out. Weird predicament.

Get him for veteran's minimum if possible. He might not even play next year, and we still have to pay like what? 1.7 million vet minimum for a guy to sit on the bench the whole year.

The Lakers are so far over the cap that even if they amnestied Kobe they still wouldn't be players in free agency this off season.

BTW both Wall and George will be restricted free agents who will get max deals. Their current team will match any offer so there is very little chance that they go anywhere.

West is a free agent this off season and the Lakers won't have cap space to sign him (even if they amnesty Kobe).

The Lakers can have cap room and they will follow the same plan as the Rockets. Retain your cap flexibity until you acquire a star(s). Then you fill in the secondary players.

If the Lakers lost Howard then their best strategy may be to tank next season and take your chances in the Andrew Wiggins lottery and then use their cap space to try and convince Lebron to come to LA. It's a long shot but there is no sure thing.

I thought that once your amnestied, you can't go back to your original team.

Do some people seriously think there's even a 0,00000001% chance the Lakers will amnesty Kobe? Come on now...

Yes, much greater than that, actually. There is a pretty decent percentage saying that this is a career ending injury. Neither are likely, but I'd give it a 10% chance that either or both will happen.

    80 MILLION is a lot.

    Until your contract has expired.

Next year is Kobe's last year of his contract for $30m (+80m tax)

He's expected to come back until Feb. that's 2 months before the end of the season.

Amnesty him and Lakers save a lot because insurance will cover most of the $30m salary, plus save on $80m tax, that's over $100m.

I think this is a real possibility with the tacit agreement from Kobe. Problem is the Lakers will want him back at the end of next year (given that he's fully recovered and back to his own self). The Lakers would want him back at a significant reduced salary in 2014. Would Kobe settle for a reduced salary? Would the team holding his bird rights outbid LA? Would LA be offering $30m a year for an old and injured Kobe until he retires? Would doing this put LA back in luxury tax hell with no flexibility and ability to spend their cap room after resigning Kobe for 30m?

This is the risk. Safest course is to not amnesty Kobe as their is no benefit to the cap this off-season, only saving $80m luxury tax. If they want to save tax they should amnesty MWP and trade Gasol.

We have a core that will stay together for 10+ years like the Spurs did, lets not go doing things the Knicks would do.

kobe should retire NOW and make a comeback in a couple years.

then and only then is he even someone worth considering. his whole prima donna routine would just mess up a good thing we have going in houston.

he should probably spend some time away from the game and accept that he if he comes back it should be at the #2 option on his team at best. otherwise he will just ruin another locker room as they watch the guy start to fade. and you know he ain't passin the ball.

How funny would it be if Kobe played next to Carmelo

Would not be enough balls to go around

If they amnestied Kobe. They'd fall to about $48 MM, also I would think they wouldn't keep Pau Gasol at that point and find a trade. They could easily sign an impact player on a backloaded contract, since they have next to no cap space in 2014.

    Retirement.

He wasn't pushed out of Chicago.
