You know, you look at the 49ers, and it's an interesting comparison. Their weak point was arguably Smith, though he had played well enough for them to be a good team.

They realized they probably had gone as far as Smith would take them, and took a chance. It might just pay off.

Unfortunately I don't think we have a Kaepernick to plug in.

I think Kaepernick is overrated and will eventually flame out, but a QB that can extend plays or run an uptempo offense is a must now. Kaepernick needs to show me he can make harder throws and take better care of the ball before I buy his stock fully.

only happened because Flynn was flat out TERRIBLE in the preseason. They gave him a million chances to just be decent, but he wasn't. they finally said ok, Wilson is playing well and Flynn would go 0-16...I guess we have to ignore the $$.

It takes that big a discrepancy

No, they didn't. Smith got hurt. They plugged in who they had. And he blew up. They were never looking at Kaep starting at all this year otherwise...it was out of necessity, not them realizing anything smart

I understand (though I felt that way after the regular season and felt the playoff game was him 'showing us' that he may be the real deal), I'm just more or less talking about the situation, and making a major change even if you aren't a 'bad' team.

But I'd take Kaepernick in a heartbeat over our QBs right now to be honest though.

I understand that, but they saw what they had and made the decision not to give Smith the job back.

I'm not convinced Kubiak and crew would do such a thing, but I could be wrong.

i agree, but Wilson also stepped up into the role. Its not like when the Broncos were trying to figure out Orton vs Tebow where both were mediocre and they decided on Tebow because of the "x factor' and not because they thought he was that much better or Kolb vs Skelton in Arizona. Wilson gave them confidence that he could actually excel.

What i'm getting at is, it wouldn't be unprecedented to sit a guaranteed contract ala Flynn in favor of a QB who actually proves they are better or have more upside. For that to happen, either Yates or Keenum would have to have a great preseason and get some game time (not just garbage time or game 4 of the preseason). I understand. BUT, the coaching staff/McNair would have to WANT competition because they realize that Schaub isn't going to get any better. So they would start the next season letting the backups know they have a shot at the starting position--thats what i'm getting at. QB Controversy baby!

The more and more i think about it..its time to fix one side of the football...our team is so dang close...but we need depth and lots of it...defense should be our first concern...since we know we are gonna be stuck with Matt for the next year or so...its time that we decided to make our defense like the Niners/Seattle...fast and opportunistic...

Trades: Consider trading Owen Daniels and Ben Tate this year for picks...

1st pick: go with ILB Alex Olgetree/or best available DB
2nd pick: NT(i like Geathers from Georgia)
3rd pick: WR/ or TE (replace Owen Daniels and his age)
    4th pick: OLB/ Right Guard
    5th pick: RB
    6th pick: WR/OLB/TE

    Simple solution:

1)Give Wade his walking papers now.... Wade sets the world on fire the 1st 2 years as DC in previous stops... Then flames out in year 3...

2)Draft a crafty slot reciever... I think Posey with time will be a good no.2 WR while Andre is here.... We need a reliable WR in the slot which enables us to run hurry up... I like that A&M WR (Swoon?)....

    3) Bring in another QB to challenge Schaub.... Smith/Flynn/ Vick/whomever..... He's obviously gonna be here for the forseeable future so challenge him... He's too complacent with his demeanor....

4)Fire special teams coach... No reason to explain that ....

    5) BURN THAT DAMN PLAY CHART KUBIAK HAS.... its annoying to see .... It obviously doesnt work

don't need to replace Schaub right away, but draft someone who could replace him in the next few years or sooner

basically how SF drafted Smith's replacement and Sea drafted Wilson (who was ready sooner than expected to start over Flynn)

I don't see how we get Johnny Football short of trading up to get him. Every team is going to want their own version of RW/RGIII/Kaepernik

I largely agree with Donny. The thing that really sucks is that we had to wait SO LONG to find this out. The Texans had the talent to be an annual playoff team starting in 2009, but had so many ridiculous breaks that year (Slaton falling apart, Kris Brown's meltdowns, etc.). Then, Frank Bush single-handedly torpedoed 2010. Things finally came together in 2011, but Matt broke his foot and we couldn't truly evaluate. Finally, in 2012, we got to see Matt and Gary's offense in meaningful December/January games... and it just doesn't cut it. At least not without an elite running game, which is pretty tough to sustain over a long period in the modern NFL. Salary cap and all.

Rick Smith and McNair do deserve some blame for giving Schaub the extension prior to the season. I know, I know -- it supposedly helps build "chemistry" and continuity, all that jazz. Family, etc. But contrast that with the approach the Ravens, a consistently winning organization, have taken with Flacco. Put up or shut up.

The extension pretty much ****s us for this offseason, and I can accept it. What sucks is that years of bad luck and Gary's mismanagement caused it to take this long to get a true evaluation of Schaub and Gary's offense. Ideally we could've learned this two or three years ago and started on contingency plans. Now, over half of the "prime" for the Johnson-Foster-Daniels offensive core is gone, and we've suddenly figured out that the QB/system isn't good enough. Killer.

Who's out there worth drafting QB-wise this year? Barkley? Roll the dice on Geno Smith? Meh.

See if a team desperate for a QB would trade for Schaub? Doubt it.

How can we judge Mat Shwaub after one playoff run? He's 1-1.

I think the emergence of Luck/RGIII/Wilson (and to a lesser degree Kaepernick) this season has colored people's expectations of how easy it is to find athletic, game-changing QBs that can make all the throws but also create with their legs. We jettison Schaub to find the next Russell Wilson and we could end up in QB purgatory like most of the league for a while. I think it is much more likely at this point that we find a few additional great defenders that can turn this defense into a true elite squad (on the level of 49ers) than we find QB that sets the team on fire in the next two years. Stick with Schaub, hope you improve the defense and that Schaub can game manage decent enough to win some Superbowls.

To go any other direction means we basically blow up the offensive side of the ball and that might result in losing guys on defense like Watt who don't want to try to play for a team that goes back into rebuilding mode.

A smart young Billionaire needs make a huge offer to Uncle Bob for the team. To tip the deal in his favor, he can toss in a complete collection of all the Matlock episodes on VHS. Then the new owner can fire Kubiak and order the next regime to draft a QB who can go deep.

And what will Uncle Bob's legacy be? That he was too damn loyal to mediocre employees, especially QBs, head coaches, and general managers.

at the very least the texans should try to find a more mobile QB to make things interesting during camp and preseason. Draft an OL for the right side with the 1st pick. A WR with the 2nd. A LB/DB with the 3rd and then fill in from there. i think i've heard the cap will go up by a couple of million, and maybe some veterans looking for spots to chase a ring will give the discount to play here.

Gotta go BPA in the first. Draft a QB in the second or third.
