Even if our defense had held the Patriots to under 30, we weren't going to win this game. They gave us some garbage time points. When it mattered, we weren't able to move the ball or score in the redzone. A large part of that is Gary's slow as molasses offense and Matt's lack of ability to make plays when the running game is dead in the water, like it was today.
Uhh, the Redskins run a read-option. That is nothing like the Texans' offense. They designed an offense around their QB's strengths, something that Kubiak needs to do after changing signal callers.
i agree with most of the comments. I think this was the year for Schaub to prove himself. He was healthy all year and it was said if he was healthy last year, we'd be in the Super Bowl. Now was his chance to shine and he pretty much choked in all the major games (vs. Pats in regular season, Vikings, Colts, Bengals game was very mediocre, and Patriots in the playoffs). He did not "STEP UP" once in any of those games--Bengals game was won b/c of field goals and they also came back to win. So the question is, is this how good it gets wtih Schaub and Kubiak at the helm? Schuab will be one year older next year and his mobility, arm, and accuracy aren't getting any better. Will the Texans make the playoffs in 2013? Probably--good chance. But can they win it all? Highly doubtful unless the defense becomes a juggernaut again with cushing back and others stepping up. So what to do about Schaub? Not sure the draft (we draft 27th) will help there, and Alex Smith, Matt Flynn, and others probably aren't an upgrade. I say let there be an open competition for QB and give Yates and Keenum an opportunity to take the starting job, or at least put Schaub on a short leash. And honestly, if I were McNair I'd seriously consider firing Kubiak and bringing in a "star" coach (like a Cowher, Gruden, Dungy etc) to inject some fight into the team. The team reflects Kubiak too much--its passive and risk-averse--not sure if that will do it but if this team wants to win it all, we have to break from the norm. Kubiak has had 6 years to prove his mettle and I think this is as good as it gets. To Do: 1) compete the QB Spot 2) Fire Marciano (duh) 3) Firke Kubiak but only if you get a top coach in his place (no 1st timers, OC or DC from top teams who "want a chance" only do this if you can get an elite coach--) 4) Bring in one more defensive star to pair with Cushing, Watt 5) FA Olineman 6) FA Receiver (jennings?)
I mean, that's what any coach would say about their QB after a playoff loss, but with Kubiak I wouldn't doubt he really means it.
I think this is the best route to go. With Schaub on the books for the next few years, it's the most logical step. I'd love to see the Texans pick up a big, space eating NT in the early rounds. We need someone next to JJ who will keep the OL honest on their double teams - someone who is big, eats up a lot of space, and will pull double teams because of size/physicality. Something needs to be done about our OLBs. They are simply not producing, and that's unacceptable given how much we blitz. As bad as Schaub was in this game, the fact is we can't keep giving up 40+ points against Brady, Rodgers and the other elite QBs in this league. It's just too hard to win those types of games regardless of who you have under center.
1. Fire Marciano... tomorrow 2 .Put Schaub/Kubiak on notice that they will be a casualty if they dont get their games improved...they just need to sit down this off-season and look on ways to improve the offense...play calling..when to audible...when to give the QB more leeway? 3. Trade Owen Daniels when he has value for picks...and rebuild our TE farm...Make Casey and Graham the Number 1 and 2...draft late for a TE 4. we get the 27th pick in the draft next year and I dont know what we should look for first??? Could we get lucky and get a player like Sherman(Seattle) and
also Bob McNair mentioned he thought Scaub did a "great job"...lol...sounds like he's content with the team as is. If i'm McNair, at age 76, i'd be getting antsy and figuring out how to get this team to the superbowl and ASAP. Clock is a tickin'
good and well, but a) Matt Flynn is a bad example because he was the answer coming into the season and played so horribly that they had to evaluate other options. You're saying give up on Schaub BEFORE the season even though money is committed. It just won't work that way b) Smith only lost his job due to injury So both of those situations, while the $$ is committed to the backup and not starter, only arose after the fact. You can't come into the season saying we're benching this guy making a ton of $$. Well, the owner won't, at least. Unless Schaub plays like complete dog**** in the preseason or gets hurt, I don't see him losing his job this coming year (purely because of the $$ committed)--even if we draft an eventual starter in the first 4 rounds.
look at every play that they dont do the read option...its Kubiak's system because he learned it from Shanahan... <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ysSBynq6E-4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
I'm aware it won't work that way. Kubiak is too risk averse, and McNair is too trusting/content. This thread is just me daydreaming as if I ran the Texans.
I don't know the cap exactly, but I can't imagine there's much room to address more than 1 of your 4 listed above via free agency. The rest need to be draft or internal. I think O line here really is about staying together as much as anything. So I think you go FA with one of the other 3...and given our track record drafting WR's + aging Andre, I'd go with a WR. Jennings is a decent choice--still only 28 I believe
I guess my point was that I don't think any owner/coach would do it in this situation (not just their personalities this time). But yeah, it'd be nice
Russell Wilson beat out Flynn for the job before the start of the season. Injuries happen all the time. So, never say never. But yeah, the deck is stacked against change at this point.
They'd be wise to, yes.. 9-11 ain't impressive, he adds another playoff flameout to his belt and he's not getting any younger. If they think Osweiller is their guy for the future then they already took care of this but they'll ride Manning for a few more years then hand the keys to a groomed young QB...this is why the Packers are in the position they are in now, and to a degree, the 49ers. Maybe Kubiak sees something in Yates, or Keenum, but to ride the Schaub train to future success is suicide. Everyone seems to see this except for McNair and Kubes.
