When we were younger, my wife was seriously considering a job at a Costa Rican resort. It was tempting but we opted against. The bar for moving is higher now with children in school. But, I'd probably do it for England or France.

Surprised more people aren't mentioning South America.

We are seriously looking and buying some land in Argentina or Brazil as a retirement possibility. Low cost of living, good healthcare, beautiful country and people.

If my company plays its cards right we might be moving into Brasil. There is still the rampant crime issue and if Sao Paulo is anything like Lima in regards
to car pollution, then that would be a big turnoff. But the positives outweigh the negatives by far.

Have you ever been to China? You can drink the air with a straw. Would be near the bottom of places I have spent any significant period of time in... worse that South Africa... at a minimum South Africa has nice landscape.

IMO you actually dodged a bullet. Don't know much about Wilmslow, but Manchester is a crappy place to live. Even worse place to raise children.

    I'm only 21, but if I could have a get-a-way like this, I wouldn't look back.

I lived in the US Virgin Islands for 4 years once. I miss some aspects of that, though I absolutely missed the crazy contigious United States when I was there and was happy to move back.

I would say no. If I HAD to, I'd chose somewhere islandy or on a coast. I've always lived in coastal places next to water, I haven't really been an inland guy.

I always said if I NEVER see Europe or Africa or Asia before I die, I wouldn't consider that some big loss. BUT the more my peers have gone out to these places and given positive accounts of their trips, its gotten me curious.

Been looking at Manchester for schools.

How bad is it? Why is it so bad?

I lived in Cheadle for a while, I think it depends upon which neighborhood you lived in as to quality of life etc.

I think Cheadle was good, Didsbury was as well, and Wilmslow is where all the professional footballers live, very posh.

After the last of our two kids are out of college, sure, it's a possibility. We'd be looking more for a place to retire, however. There are mixed feelings. The two kids, mainly. If they end up with lucrative jobs, no problem, but if they don't, flying them to where we end up could be very expensive, as would trips back here to see them. What we'll likely end up doing is keeping our pad in Austin (almost paid for) and subletting apartments in different cities in Europe and elsewhere for a month at a time. This is quite common now and far cheaper in a city like Paris, London, Rome, or Amsterdam (for example) than a hotel, even an inexpensive one. You can sublet a canal boat in Amsterdam, an apartment on the Left Bank in Paris. You have a base of operations, can cook your own meals if you like, use a Eurail Pass to bee-bop to Greece, Prague, Berlin... wherever the spirit moves you. We'll have the same income whether we're in Austin, or overseas, so why not? It's something we've been thinking about for a long time.

Not totally sure, but probably. Australia is definitely where I'd go. I have dual citizenship anyhow, so that's one less complication to deal with.
