For a decent raise, I'd live and work in the outskirts of Nanaimo, BC...

My wife and I have been toying with the idea of moving to Hawaii (she's from Kauai). There are few (IT) jobs in Hawaii that pay and the cost of living is sick. A few years back, we went to one of the little mom-and-pop stores (Sueoka's in Koloa) on Kauai and they were selling milk at $9 a gallon.

That being said, we will eventually end up somewhere in Hawaii...probably Oahu...although I'd prefer Maui or the Big Island.

Vancouver is the first city the wife and I didn't roll our eyes at the possibility of moving too. But as you said, probably would take a substantial raise.

America, the continent, or [The United States of] America?

If America the continent, then NO, and I'd stay in the continent and would pick either Costa Rica or Peru.

If the continent, I'll pick Africa. I sure love me some political unrest! :p

Yes. I'd go to France, Spain, The Fijis, possibly Thailand, possibly Indonesia.

    There's a chance I'd go to Australia

About 5 years ago I tried to convince my wife to move the family to Wilmslow UK (suburb of Manchester) to take a Dev director position with Travelers tales, she said no......so we went another direction.

One of my best friends took the job (a guy who worked for me) and they make all the lego games.

I wish I could have convinced her a little better....lol.

Just "a" job, eh? I notice not a lot of explanation from some.

I could see entertaining it, but I'm a little surprised at how eager so many are. Grass is always greener for some, I guess. Some people project to be so unhappy... I can't help but wonder if they don't think that sentiment would follow some of them wherever they went.

I wonder if, once everyone got there, they'd still think they made the right choice. I see a lot of nice pictures, etc. but there's no guarantee you're moving to the scenic part of these places... just like living here doesn't mean you have a Manhattan apartment with a view, or a seaside condo. Nor would it mean automatic acceptance in your place of choice.

I know people who have done this and regretted it... and others who didn't regret it. You have to know that there are many in other countries, some which people are listing, that would love to leave there as well.

That said, nothing wrong with making an educated decision on where to spend your life. Me? I'm good, but i wouldn't be against considering the idea if the opportunity presented itself.

I would like to work as a celebrity (in anything really) in any country with a government that is not too restrictive in the people's freedom. That way I can do minimal work and still receive high $$$ to enjoy some of the better things in life.

As someone who has worked/lived oversees, I would certainly do so again. However, I would only do it temporarily. I would always want to come back. Not until you have lived in other countries do you realize how nice you have it in the US and how much higher the standard of living is.

I'm in the culinary field, so without a doubt I would leave the country to learn other techniques/styles/methods

Right there with you. Though living abroad does make you miss and appreciate aspects of America, that quickly goes away once you return and get used to the lifestyle.

It's a nice opportunity to live abroad, but I suppose a question would be whether you would want to live somewhere new or different or somewhere you could feel just as comfortable in with all of the conveniences of home (which, of course, is relative to where one was raised).

I personally desire to move to Northern California, though would certainly consider a "temporary" (1-2 years) stay in parts of Europe, China, or Brazil. I'm not exactly a language buff, so I would prefer, as was mentioned, an American company.
