hell no keep rafer, let les pay the tax. I could care less that he's out 4 million because we get to keep a player tha could actually play instead of just getting an oldtimer that is worse than half the young kids out there. No one wants to see if butler can at least play some ball before pulling this trade?

    September 05, 2007

Mutombo: It's time to stop wasting time. It's time?

Yes, when the alarm is blaring and the house is on fire.

    It's time?

Yes, when the barn door is wide open and all of the horses have fled.

    It's time?

Yes, when you're standing on tiptoes and the rising water is already lapping at your chin.

Dikembe Mutombo has been playing basketball since what seems like the dawn of man, but he knows that NBA careers are over in the flap of a hummingbird's wings.

That's why he stormed out of the Toyota Center so angry and frustated on the night of the Game 7 loss to the Utah Jazz.

"That was our time," Mutombo said when I spoke to him Wednesday night at the opening of the NBA's Basketball Without Borders program in Johannesburg, South Africa. "I believe that in my heart. We had come together over season to make ourselves into a very good team and we had a chance to do something special."

Mutombo says it is almost a foregone conclusion that he will re-sign with the Rockets for one final NBA season, probably for around $1.9 million. But what is still stuck inside his head is the picture of all the Rockets let get away.

He filled in at center when Yao Ming missed two months with a broken leg. He helped keep the season from falling apart. He saw the No. 1 seed Dallas Mavericks get upset in the first round of the playoffs by the Golden State Warriors and realized the path was clear for the Rockets to make a deep run, at least to the Western Conference finals.

He saw it all vanish in one helpless, hapless second half on the Rockets' home floor.

Mutombo is not blaming anyone, not pointing any fingers. But if there is a message to deliver when training camp starts in October, it is that time waits for no one.

Tracy McGrady is entering his 11th NBA season. Yao Ming will open his sixth. Neither has won a single playoff series in his career.

"You can always say there will be another year and it will get better next season," Mutombo said. "Then you get to the point where I am and you run out of years. I want to play one more year, but I don't want to waste it. The one thing we all run out of is time."
