It's easier for them to get a fake 3rd star when their options are limited.

Ty Lawson, Carmelo Anthony in decline and bad fit........

the clippers indeed offered paul the max, there was a video documentary with Jay Z in which paul walks through the process of going to the rockets...he turned down a max 5 year deal from the clippers.

Yes, we disagree about what the Clips would do.

I'm not sure what the "Blake Griffin route" means. They maxed out BG, and I think that they would have been perfectly happy to do that with CP3. The fact though, is that it never got that far because Paul told them that he was leaving. Just letting him walk for nothing was the worst scenario. Resigning him and then trading him (like Griffin) got them something in return. CP3 took that option off the table and that forced a trade in order to get some return.

Not using the full MLE isn't "a clear indication" of anything. Did you consider that the MLE is our only way to acquire a player who gets bought out/released during the year for anything above minimum salary?

As I said, there's no way that we'll ever know what the Clippers would have done if CP3 hadn't told them that he was leaving and forced a trade but their actions indicated that they intended to resign him for the max.

    https://bleacherreport.com/articles...chris-paul-will-absolutely-stay-with-clippers

Would they have signed him and then later traded him as they did with BG? There's no way to know but it's doubtful that they were going to let him walk for nothing.

Either way, he would have made a lot more money than he ended getting here.

Thank you for the break down. If you read my other posts, you'd know I said repeatedly that I did not blame players (including Ryan Anderson) for getting as much money as they could get. It's the management's job too manage contracts.

What I am trying to say is that Chris Paul's salary DOES affect how we can or cannot sign other players. Your break down actually proves my point that IT'S NOT ABOUT THE CAP BUT ABOUT THE TAX. You guys keep using the cap to dismiss that fact that Paul's salary does affect team building.

And yes, Anderson's salary (now translated to Kinght's and Chriss's) is still a factor. Whether it was reasonable at that time to sign Anderson is another debate. It is a fact that these overpaid contracts negatively affect how we could build the roster. Do you depute this point?

To be fair, almost every team has this kind of dead weight contracts. But some posters feel the need to defend Morey any time someone is pointing to a mistake he made. Morey himself probably wouldn't defend his decisions like that.

I typically don’t entertain whiners but I 100% agree about cp3. He should’ve taken less money given his age and the fact we were trying to get a championship.

But st the same time he’s not the only star that does this but it shows what’s more important. His chasing a championship is all talk because it’s money first then winning

Is what it is who’s to say they wouldn’t do the same

As it's been said, what players are you even referring to that we could ge this year with the supposed MLE?? All that could have been influenced this year is MLE money that Morey historically doesnt even use until buyout(I have no idea why though but thats besides the point). Every indication seems to be that Tilman will spend but it has to be for a winning team, so we dont know how much the tax is actually affecting Morey or if he's just doing his usual Morey thing. Anything else is baseless assumption.

I am telling you that neither the players or management is to be blamed here. We don’t live in a world of black and white, but rather shades of gray. NBA contracts are always a gamble, no matter how “good” or “bad” it looks on paper. This is fact. If Ryno launched more 3’s instead of shrinking, he would have been worth his $20M contract. If the salary cap continued to rise as expected, very few people would have considered it unreasonable.

Again, you are completely wrong. Even if CP3 takes a pay cut over $10M to avoid the tax, we would still be in the same boat, just with a slightly bigger MLE. This returns us to the original question uneducated posters should be trying to answer first; who could we have signed for the MLE that would have realistically made a significant difference? Ariza reportedly would have considered $10M, but that’s still almost $2M above the non-taxpayer’s MLE. Maybe Tony Parker, but would he really come to the Rockets to play behind CP3 and Harden? Claims that if CP3 took a pay cut, we would sign someone helpful is simply stupid at best.

See, this is where you and I fundamentally disagree. While I agree that negative value contracts detrimentally affect a team’s roster options, I don’t consider contracts that became negative value after the fact “overpaid”. You can have a “good” contract when signed initially and then have it turn “bad” after the fact for all kinds of reasons. A budding superstar could sign the max, suffer a career ending injury, and then that contract becomes negative value. Was it a “bad” contract and the fault of a GM? Absolutely not.

In the same vein, do I feel Morey was at fault for giving either Anderson or CP3 their contracts? Again, absolutely not. Neither were what I considered “bad” at the time and with CP3, time will tell if it actually is negative value. As for Chriss and Knight, both fill needed backup positions. Chriss had a chance to shine in a system that on paper worked to his strengths just like GG, but unfortunately it did not work out. Knight (very talented) is still coming back from injury, so it remains to be seen if he will work out. If he does though, then all of a sudden our roster talent changes as well.

Everything is judged after the fact. You can talk "it could have been if..." blah blah blah. If a decision turned out bad after the fact, it was a bad decision. Let's take the example of this season so far. Think how excited a lot of fans were before the season started. But now look what has happened "after the fact." You could talk all you want about how if Gordon could shoot better, Melo could fit better, Paul could be healthier, etc., the fact is, they don't and they aren't. Could the problems be predicted? Not 100%. But could the possibilities be anticipated and put into consideration? Absolutely. That's what CEOs and GMs are hired with millions of dollars to do.

(BTW, criticizing a bad decision after the fact is NOT claiming that I have better knowledge than Morey or that I could do a better job. I don't understand why some people believe that we can never make criticism because we aren't as knowledgeable as the pros. We absolutely can point out the fact that the CEO of a company made a bad mistake, without claiming that we could have done a better job if we were the CEO.)

What you are arguing is that if anything bad happens, its just bad luck and the decision maker has no fault because nobody could predict the future. Of course, we have to take into account whether a contract was signed with good reasons even if it turns out bad. Some mistakes are more understandable and therefore forgivable than others. But they are still mistakes.

I have always believed Beverley asked for that trade because he knew the Rockets were gonna get CP3 and he was gonna be out anyway. I remember him mentioning something about it at the exit interviews.

Any suggestions I make will just be speculations. Who am I to say which player could have been signed and could have been better. You guys are looking at me like I am some monster who are out to kill our beloved Morey. The debate with @chenjy9 began with a simple comment from me that you can't just dismiss the amount of Paul's salary by saying that it does not affect our cap situation because it is not about the cap, it is about the tax. It should be a pretty straightforward fact. No need to jump all over it to defend the FO.

My problem with your argument is that all decisions with bad results are bad decisions, which is absolutely asinine. There is a very clear difference between good or solid decisions that end up poorly and decisions that are bad when made. This is especially true with contracts where so many unpredictable and uncontrollable factors are involved.

Every business wants profits. If Paul is overpaid by $20 million a year, then the team can't keep Ariza/Moute and deal them/4 FRPs for Butler.

As a 60 game player a season, Chris Paul is worth 60 million for 3 years.

If you think CP3 is only worth $20M per year, there is no point in talking to you.

I dont have a problem criticizing Morey, this off season wasnt his best(but I trust he still has a handle on the situation). My arugment was that Chris Paul not taking a pay cut did not have any effect on this year and that him taking a small pay cut for a some random MLE player wasnt gonna change much at all and to add to that, weve never used that money that early to begin with.

Bev said he wanted to be traded, weither or not that is true that is what he said. Instead of trading Bev + Lou + Trez + Decker you could have moved Decker and Bev for a quality offensive running PG, kept trez, and filled in 2 forwards with the 26 mil or so you saved. Also acquiring Tucker and the rise of Capela.. The rockets would be in good shape for a long time to come.
