they just need to get the right players to participate. i want to see westbrook and lebron instead of chase budinger of the world.
A radical change is needed. Instead of "Sprite Dunk Contest", they should create an "8Ball Drunk Contest" drunk contest. That would open so many possibilities: from classical drunk dunking, to pitcher dunking and the all new DUI challenge. All star weekend would finally be exciting again.
First, NBA has to try everything possible to make these guys participate. The Charity idea is good, if they have the chance to win 1mil for Charity they HAVE to participate or otherwise will be the black sheeps for the Media. 1. Participants:Bron, Griffin, Westbrook, Durant, Rose, Wall. That's 6 dunkers which is better than 4 or 8 imo. 2. Limit props and all these gimmicks(throwback jersey, cape,...) so that the focus will solely be on the pure dunking skills. You'll only be able to use a prop once in the contest. 3. You can only use a teammate once. 4. 3 rounds, each participant has two dunks. First four advance to second round, first two advance to final round. 5. The best idea I come up with: Every guy gets a Dunk Coach, but not like the scrubs from last year. They all will get one pro dunker(Kenny Dobbs, Golden Child, Air Up There, Air Bama, Exile, Young Hollywood,...) to train them. They have to INVENT one dunk(without props or teammate) during the process and show it in the Dunk Contest. That way you'd make sure you have six dunks that will bring the house down. Can you imagine Bron, Wall, Rose, Westbrook, Griffin,... working for a few weeks with these guys and coming up with absolute beast dunks? I know it would be hot. 6. Bring back the jury, but split it with two dunking legends(Dawkins, Nique, Jordan, Carter, etc.) and two pro dunkers, maybe one fan, too. That way you'll make sure the right dunks get appreciated. 7. Every missed dunk will automatically lead to one point less possible on the cards, so that something like Derrick Williams or Rudy Fernandez won't happen again. 8. Let Kenny Smtih stay out of it, that show-ish kills the whole thing because it seems that they already planned everything and know what dunks will happen. No one but the dunkers and their coaches should know what happens. No more judges killing guys so that the guys with the planned highlights for the final round will be in it. 9. Maybe make it that one dunk has to pay hommage to a legendary dunk from a past contest. Air Jordan freethrow line dunk 2.0 with Bron? Oh yes.... Nique's insane windmills with Griffin....oh yea. Iggy stuff with Westbrook, unh unh. Wall going Carter. You'd appreciate it and it would bring back memories. Plus, these dunks were pure gold and wouldn't disappoint. 10. That's all I came up with right now, feedback would be appreciated.
I think giving the winner money to donate to charity is a great theory, however I feel that it may end up leaving less incentive to the players either to participate or give a 100%, as cynical as that sounds. I just got the feeling while watching the skills competition when kids' education scholarships on the line, more than half of the participants were half-assing it. Only when it was to the final round, did they play hard, and it may have been more so the competitive juices than anything altruistic.
^^ I defend Kyrie cause his kid looked like an azzhole, maybe that's why he didn't give a F. The other guys were okay, if you pace yourself too much in that competition you're more likely to fail. Running/jogging likely only leads to a 1 or 2sec difference in the final time, so it's better to go medium pace and make no mistake.
Don't allow any cars, couches, or motorcycles. I think someone should try to recruit Yao and dunk over him, or Shaq, but tell them to actually try to block it. If they succeed. EPIC. If they fail, wouldn't be any lamer than the last 5 years of the dunk contest. At least a midget didn't win this year just because he could dunk the ball after 11 tries. My dad called me up complaining about the game sunday. He thinks, and I think he said he heard this on sportcenter or 610 radio, that the game should mean something. Cash means nothing to these all-stars, they're all already makin it for the most part. However, what if the winning conference got home-court advantage in the finals, like baseball. At least they would be playing for SOMETHING. Can an older member provide a little insight on the all-star games of the 90s and earlier? I don't remember any of them, were they as lame as these? There is probably nothing you can do to make the game competitive, no one wants to get hurt, and no one wants to see anyone get hurt....welll I didn't mind seeing Kobe break his nose.
What they changed the format to a sort of like Horse but with dunks. You could have them spell out something smaller like DUNK or JAM or something. They would picking names at random to do a "match" play tournament. If the guy after do cannot do the dunk they get letter obviously, but then you could add that if both players can do the dunk, then letter would go to the player who scored higher.
I think 4 is perfect. In the great 2000 contest, no one rememberd Ricky Davis, Larry Hughes and Jerry Stackhouse were in it. Its all Vince Carter, T-Mac and Steve Francis. No need for the extras, keep it with the best few. I actually don't mind props. But yeah I can agree with limiting them. Thats just what I call having "free time" to actually CARE about the contest. All these guys have all the time and resources to train already. You can't actually force Lebron to work with "Air Bama". It'd be like forcing Kevin Love to work with Dan Majerle for the 3 point contest or something. Yes bring back the judges. OR, if it MUST be the fan vote, have the fans vote EVERY ROUND. I did like the "pageant" type presentation at the end of "and the WINNER of Mr Dunk 2012 iiiiiiis" but it was kinda lame not seeing the suspense of EACH dunk. Not sure what you mean here? How do we even KNOW what Derrick Williams got on his attempts? It was all one combined Twitter vote score lol. I said previously to keep the ENTIRE TNT BROADCAST team out of it. Kenny and EVERYONE. Put it BACK to regular commentators like Mike Breen or Mike Tirico for PROFESSIONAL presentation. The TNT guys arent "street" or are they polished. They're just a-holes who act like they'd rather be gambling or golfing. They've done that before. TERRIBLE IDEA. Remember the "dunk wheel" that forced dunkers to do a signature dunk of one of the legends. It made Steve Francis have to do a DR J dunk and it took AWAY from Francis's strengths. People didnt really like the Jeremy Evans "Mailman" dunk that much. BUT if the contestants can CHOOSE their own legends dunk besides being FORCED to do one, then it'd make sense. Cuz then it'd be judged on precision like gymnastics
