I gotta go with Galveston, today was a nice day and if the weather holds up like this I would think it would be great to be on Galveston this weekend.
Rain expected in a lot of Texas this weekend - Galveston & SA included. If you hit SA, stay at the Menger Hotel.
Me neither, but I HAVE liked or disliked someone else's mammories... RM, try Casa Del Mar in Galveston. Right on 61st and Seawall and VERY reasonable. We stayed there for NYE. It's only like $30 extra for a room with an ocean view.
Well great, thanks a lot nature. How much more rain are we gonna get? I'm still afraid to walk on my lawn for fear of sinking in mud.

Kind of far, but the Rio Grande Valley in South Texas is probably one of, if not the very best places in all of America to go bird watching. I have NOT been personally, but I keep reading about it and am itching to go. Of course, it's far, and you'd probably want to find a nice B&B, which you said you are trying to avoid. So, my second suggesstion would be the Lighthouse Inn at Aransas Bay in Rockport-Fulton. For activities you could go to the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge and look for Roseate Spoonbills (beautiful), cross the ferry to Aransas or Mustang Beach, go fishing, there's a cruise/dinner/symphony combo they're offering this Saturday, rent kayaks and go kayaking, go to Rockport Beach, visit the Fulton Mansion, go to Chorpus (45 minute drive) and visit the Texas State Aquarium, or the battleship or anything else you want to do in Chorpus, take a whooping crane boat cruise, charter a fishing trip (in the flats or deep sea)... ...they're all pretty relaxing things to do, don't go expecting to be blown away, but to just have a nice relaxing weekend filled with some interesting activities.
Texas State Aquarium isn't far. Water Street has some decent bars and the occasional good live show. It's a shame you couldn't wait until baseball season as Whataburger Park is a great place to see a game and it would be a little warmer to hit the beach.
In Galveston- Have you stayed at the Tremont House- now affiliatted with a national chain I think. For food - try Saltwater grill- 21st @ Post Office- across from opera House-watch the guy make gumbo at the steam pots at the bar. The Filet Mignon is really good - you mentioned Steak. Rudy and Pacos acros the street is also good. For breakfast - try the Phoenix- near the Tremont-on a sunny day eat at the outdoor tables- nice. The Tremont has a really beautiful bar. Ask for a room facing the interior atrium. Enjoy the piano.
Good recomendations. My wife and I have enjoyed the Tremont. As you mentioned, there's someone playing piano in the bar/atrium area every evening. Biggest downside is that it doesn't have a hot tub or pool. (miss the hot tub more than the pool, myself) When we were there, you could use the facilities at the Galvez, but you have to get there. The Saltwater Grill is excellent! Antique stores and galleries in the area. The San Luis isn't as romantic, but it has balconies overlooking the water at the sea wall, and a great pool and hot tub area. Very nice for a "weekend away" from Houston, and we've done that a few times. Not too far to Gaido's. What to do in Corpus? Eat fresh boiled shrimp! We always go to a bar, like the Waterfront, and put away a pound at a time.
That's a good idea except we go to Austin more than any other place when we travel. Plus, she hasn't seen her best friend who lives there since September and we want this weekend to be about us and us only. No friends or family. I'd be tempted to go see Major and she'd be tempted to go see her friend.
Yes, although it falls under B&B, technically. The Knopp School Road B&B calls itself a B&B, but it's a handful of cabins from the 1800's, remodeled and added on to, 4 or 5 miles outside of town, all with private hot tubs. Our favorite cabin has a modern bath with a shower big enough for 2, with 2 shower heads, a huge tub, candles scattered around, and outside the door is the hot tub, surrounded by a stucco wall with a wooden gate. Covered veranda overlooking beautiful pastures and big oaks. Peacocks wandering around. Queen size bed in the bedroom. It's completely private. We didn't see anyone around our cabin the whole time we were there last winter. The fridge is packed with breakfast stuff. We tried real hard to make a dent in it, and couldn't. You don't eat breakfast in someone's house, which we liked. There was a big plate of "pigs in a blanket," but the "pigs" were great German sausages from somewhere in town. Home made muffins. Loads of stuff. It has a Jenn-Air type stove, so you could make your own steaks if you wanted to. TV with surround sound and CD/DVD player. Fireplace you light by pushing a button. Surrounded by trees. They're all probably booked for the weekend, though.
We're staying in that cabin this weekend, but we reserved it in October. One of the few places I've been to that was better than the website described. I was probably stupid to mention it. http://www.knoppschoolroad.com/index.php
