I watched the 2nd half of the game last night..and sure it was somewhat entertaining but man I can't imagine watching that over the NBA.

The frantic defense + a headless chicken offense...someone dribbles for 5 secs..passes it off..someone else dribbles..20 secs later someone throws up a brick. It looks like chaos out there.

The 3pt line needs to be expanded..it looks so damn crowded. Or they need to play 4 on 4.

Yeah we know college kids suck that’s the point. Leave it to the pros. Didn’t the player who broke the College 3 point record brick his team out in the second round of the tourney?

I don't think this is true. I think NBA players try (and even teams are tanking the guys on the court are auditioning for paychecks), I don't think trying correlates perfectly to entertaining (otherwise you'd be asking me when my 9 year old's next bball game is so you could watch), and I actually think the playoffs is hit or miss - but when it hits, indeed, it is amazing... but when it misses, its the inevitable lack of parity that just gets boring and in fact is what has made the offseason and season increasingly more entertaining for me than the playoffs (but that might be a personal thing)

The second half of these games gets more exciting because the teams, especially the trailing team, startsto abandon the deliberate grinding approach and play more free flowing NBA-style basketball, at least that's the way it seemed to me. Unless of course you are Duke in which case you play less exciting and then you lose.

This thread is the same idea that makes me always question "best player ever" lists in sports. This isn't "as" true in the MLB, where generally the sports is played the same way it was decades or even a century ago.

But in the NFL, where the speed and strength of the game has increased so much combined with strategy changes, absolutely.

And way more so in the NBA. Not only has the speed, strength, athleticism, heights, size, etc. of the players increased, not only does strategy wax and wane in terms of pace, offense vs. defense, etc., but the rules have changed many many times. Introduction of 3 point line, introduction of zone, change in hand-check rules, change in shot clock rules, etc.

Or put more simply, you can find high quality footage of very old NBA games on youtube. There's one guy in particular who cleans it all up, adjust the frame-rate to make it the same as today, etc. Some as early as Mikan, but definitely Wilt, Russell, etc. You can't possibly watch that and say this is the same game. It's nowhere close. It's hard to tell for sure, but certainly seems like Virginia would have a good chance to win some rings in that 8 or 9 team league.

This doesn't mean Wilt or Russell couldn't play today. Even ignoring the "what if they grew up today" or "what if they had access to modern nutrition and exercise" type crap... obviously these guys were supreme athletes. But in a league where there were much fewer of them in general.

So how could I possibly put Wilt or Russell in a top 10 list?? It's comparing apples to oranges.

They coast, most of the game they are not playing HARD they are playing pickup level or a little better until the 4th. The business side of the NBA or the players treating it as entertainment and not a competition is a problem - at least for me.....but the playoffs they all try all game long, and THAT is what I like the most.

Harden needs a hardware to be in that next level. So in some ways, this is all fair. Imagine if Michael with all that flare never won a ring.

That's just not true. Not to mention energy is a finite source, if the players don't pace themselves throughout a game, 82 games would be too much.

That's like saying Marathon runners don't sprint enough. Of course they don't.

College basketball is not amazing, honestly, right now it's the style of basketball that you used to profess to hate back during the JVG days.

Slow pace, lots of transition defense, limit the possessions.

I used to laugh and mock when Les told JVG to play "more phoenix like" - turns out Les was on to something, because the whole damned league does it now.
