Typically, I don't expect sketch comedians to have superior rapping flow. It's a surprise with Glover, like it was a surprise years ago with SNL's Chris Parnell. So, due to defying that expectation, and approaching his lyrics with a comedian's wit, Glover gets, and probably deserves, some benefit of the doubt.
Dude freestyled at the Wu-Tang showcase during sxsw this year. He is very entertaining just being himself, but I was bored then, and Childish Gambino does nothing for me. I'd much rather listen to him speak candidly. He's an NYU Writing grad, and for me that sorta cancels out any street cred he's trying to garner. From what I understand the show will be a little of both, so I'll probably check it out if I can get in free.
