I think that the cop has no jurisdiction in the matter, and not sure why the manager would call the cops.

IMO, they should pay the $25 then talk to the owner about a refund, and if necessary got to small claims court.

    so...spill it. what happened?

I'd think the cop would do what he could so the lady could take her dog home and let them resolve their billing dispute through other channels. No need for him to take a side unless the vet was unwilling to release the dog.

I'd shoot them both for wasting my time with such a petty dispute and then call some of my cop friends to help me cover it up.

    This.

Why on God's green earth would you call the cops for this?

The police are not around to solve every little petty dispute that arises. This is not a legal matter unless one of them decides to take it to court, in which case the police should STILL NOT be called...it should be settled in small claims court. The manager is an idiot and should be fired for both making her pay the fee and calling the police.

The cop can really only take the side of the manager.

He can't enforce anything other than to make the customer leave the store.

It seems pretty obvious that the officer sided with the manager since this is otherwise a non-story.

I really wish you would tell us the place so I can be sure to never take my animal there. Being a hardass over 5 minutes? With that kind of customer support, I can't imagine they'll be in business much longer anyway.

it's a non-story either way, but if I were the officer, I would side with whoever didn't make the call to make me come waste my time over 1 minute and $25 over something that has nothing to do with laws being broken.

i think bobrek nailed it. If the cop sided with the customer, why the thread laying out how she was absolutely in the right? Possibly the cop told her to just pay and dispute if she wanted. If he could have added a 'rolleyes' he would have done so.

I side with the customer on this one. Not the customer's fault for coming in before 5 to pick it up regardless. Terrible reason to call the cops. Terrible service.

Its a civil, not a criminal issue IMO. Cop sided with the manager and explained to the customer that if they wanted their pet back, they would have to pay the $25, otherwise, the clinic could keep the dog until the issue was resolved in civil court. I don't think the cop could make the manager give the pet back without the customer paying the $25.

I'd side with the manager and arrest the customer.

    So the conclusion:

The cop shows up (about 20 minutes later) and AGREES with the manager and tells the lady to pay the 25 dollar fee. The lady pays the fee and vows never to come back.

My jaw hit the floor when I heard this and I got so angry. If I had been the lady not only would I have vowed never to come back I would have been posting reviews everywhere alerting everyone to this incident. I personally got really upset and came here just to see if I was crazy. Apparently I'm not.

I can't give the name of the place since the person who told me the story may get fired (given the manager, I wouldn't put it past her).

Seems like it was LEGALLY handled correctly.

Business wise, it was handled poorly.

It wasn't even two minutes she was there before 5. The phone will be more accurate than the clinic's clock.

I'd be on the customer's side for a few reasons:

    (1) The business (vet) could easily set their clock a few minutes fast for the very purpose of collecting these late pick-up fees close to 5pm. Easy to fake.

    (2) Time on the cell phone is usually very accurate these days since it's synced with the towers.

    (3) She even called to get the official time, so it's quite clear it was before 5pm.

    (4) In my opinion, businesses should be more lenient with edge cases like this anyway to avoid pissing off a consumer and losing their business. It's despicable that they want to call the cops and make a big deal over $25.
