I'm not saying everyone on clutchcity is like this, but it seems to be the general theme. People on here loves Rockets players in their rookie season, but learn to hate them afterwards.

    Exhibit 1: Cuttino Mobley
When he was a rookie, everyone couldn't believe what a steal we got in the 2nd round! Everyone was saying, "He's a clutch player... and he can beat his man off the dribble whenever he wants... and he deserves more PT". Today, people on here doesn't even care if Cat comes back from injury.

    Exhibit 2: Steve Francis
When he was a rookie, everyone on here thought he would be the next great Rocket. The future premiere point guard of the league... the guy that will lead us to championships. But now, he gets nothing but criticism on how he can't pass or doesn't always say the right thing.

    Exhibit 3: Eddie Griffin
When we traded for him, everyone on here couldn't believe it! "We got the best player in the draft!", many said. Him & Steve were gonna lead our team to greatness... but just after his second season... someone whom found himself lost in a deep forward team... now all of a sudden sucks. Last season he was touted for being for having great all-around skills, not many are saying he can't do a thing on the court.

Geez... this is even happening with Rudy T.

So I wonder what people on here will say about Yao next season??? Maybe... "We should trade him cuz he doesn't have the heart to win" or "I'd rather see Collier start than Ming" I also wonder what kind of bazaar trade proposals people will post for Ming?

Francis, Mobley, Griffin, and Ming will be integral parts of the championship team in 2004.

As soon as Ming has like 3 straight bad games and Jay Williams has 1 good in that stretch..there will be a thread named: "Did the Rockets make a mistake?"

    Who is Jay.W, Gooden?
    There's only Yao.
Yaoming is a smart kid and he's perfecting himself at a very astonishing speed. He learns every game night. e.g. after Divac beat him well, he jam over Tim Duncan. Let's see the developin' track of Yao's 17 NBA games.
I DON'T think Yao will be possibly hated in Houston.

    Haha nice topic dream_team. :)

I think members on here (including me) like to complain a lot so if the worst happens we'll be there pretending like we knew what happened.

You're saying damned right! Whatever we complain here, what we actually want in heart is the Rox can win more and more games. Of course, with the help of our big Yao. On the other hand, we don't want to see loses, we want wins. If we lose in the end, at least I am right, cox i had known it would happen.

PS. I think Griffin is a very talented player. He can shoot and Reb is good.

I'm not waiting for next year until people rag on Yao, I'm waiting until his next bad game. As soon as anybody has a bad game, the wolves come out to sick on the prey.

Bashing a player from week to week usually starts when that player
shows no sign (not in the near future) if improving, i.e. bad habits,
inconsistent, or what some like to call "a streaky shooter."

    It's a love-hate relationship.

Francis is an underachiever. He has relied on his athletic ability for most
of his career. Hakeem too was an underachiever *most* of his career.

Griff has had some bad games recently, but I have not bashed him because
I know that he's only 20. But in the next 2 to 3 years, if he shows no improvement
    then he is "bash" material.

Yao has a base of knowledge. Yao has a good starting point. He doesn't rely
on his athletic ability (he has some), but more on his basketball IQ.
He's a cerebral player, like Bird.

I'd say that only reason that I'd bash Yao is if he'd become a victim of
aggressiveness from our opponents. "Don't back down Yao, go at them!"

I mean, the guy "KNOWS" how to play the game. He just lacks on
strength and speed. That will come. But, I just hope that, in 2 years,
when everyone from other cities want to beat Yao, that Yao will not
back down from them. There will be a lot of teams that want to knock
Yao off his perch (Just like everyone wanted to beat Jordan when he came
    to town).

He's has to be ready for that. Thus far he's done well in this department.

But, a lot of players (TD, ZI, JZ, Shaq, DM) will be just feeling him out.
They are trying to see what can he do? After that, they will have a "game plan" for him.
That's when it gets tough for Yao. When *everyone* knows that he's "the Man!"

You're absolutely right. Yao has a free pass for this season, but if he isn't playing like an MVP candidate next season, people will start to rip him.

Dav' you are one of the Francis bashers that I have attempted to give the benefit of the doubt, if for no other reason than the fact that I can atleast follow the points that you make about Francis, even if I don't agree with them. But the comment above is down right rudiculous and shows your ignorance of Steve Francis as a player.

I have to ask you, would the term "gym rat" (some one who is always praticing) be used to describe a player that was an underachiever?

This term has been used by many bball analysts (including our very own Clutch) to describe Steve on numerous occasions. It was even mentioned that Rudy at one point had to tell Steve and Cat to cut back on how much they were in the gym playing ball and working on their games. It was also mentioned that Steve is regularly the first one at pratice and that he and Yao are usually the last to leave. Is that an underachiever?

Those who have watched Steve since his rookie year also know that his mid-range shot was nowhere near as consistent as it is now. This too required him to put in extra work and develop good (and consistent) shooting form. Is that an underachiever?

Also would an underachiever come into camp every year in excellent playing shape? How about you read some of Clutch's training camp reports that mention Steve and his conditioning. Hell in the last Rox broadcast, Bill Worrell mentioned the Steve and Yao have been working hard[/] and going through some rigorous workouts with the Rox strength and conditioning coach Anthony Falsone. Does that sound like and underachiever to you?

If it does, then I submit that not only was your comment igonorant, but so are you. You Francis bashers simply must stop this madness.

Put it this way. Francis is working towards becoming a balanced player. But
this is new to him. After talks with CD, Jordan, West during the off season
he has realized that dunking and flashy dribbling wont cut it as a winner
in this league. This mind-set was partially a cultural thing and a youth
thing. But, after years of watching Stockton, Marbury, Nash, Payton
school Francis, it was apparent that he wasn't "thinking" but rather
    forcing.

My comments about Francis being an "underachiever" are regards to
what Yao as worked on as a youth, that Francis has NOT (until now).

Wasted time. He's been underachieving in the past. We'll see if he can
learn the game. I give him 3 more years.

Trust me. I know that he's only been in the league 3 years (on 4th).

By the way, there's one thing that will hinder him no matter
    what he does. Small hands.

What about the mental aspect of the game, huh? I think we know the
guy is fast and can jump.

Apparently you didn't listen to talk radio the first 2 weeks of the season. Yao was the biggest bust in basketball. Many here felt the same way.

    Quoted by DavidS
Francis is an underachiever. He has relied on his athletic ability for most of his career. Hakeem too was an underachiever *most* of his career.

If you consider these two under achievers, I wish the entire team would have there tendecies.

Hakeem stayed in the gym and working on his post moves. Furthermore there were numerous reports through out his career, that he was always in the weight room getting ready for the upcoming season.

To name Bird and Ming, hell neither one had or have much athletic ability to rely on. If you think that if Bird or Yao had a Vince Carter jumping ability and still wouldn't use it, that would be very ignorant and riducolous to think or say so.

Anyway not trying to pick an arguement just surprise that you would pick those two Rockets. I would understand if you said Cato, or even Bullard but those two.

Using athletic ability to gain advantage to ashamed of. Even Jordon started as a athlete in his career.
It is all about adjusting your game at the right time. Steve, since he is young, should play with fire and passion even at the cost of some mistakes. His strenght at this moment is explosiveness and it is only natural that he is playing his strenght.
Maturity can come when his body start to feel the strain and once he really realize the need to adapt his game.
I think trying to force him to change his style, would not only hinder present form but also shatter his confidence and that could be a problem in the long-run as well.

Cato, in your eyes, would be considered an underachiever only because
    of his high contract.

But, in reality, he's an overachiever.

He has to push himself to the limit because he doesn't have the natural
athletic ability/body that Hakeem and Francis do.

How was Hakeem an underachiever? The guy put 110% in until his body declined on him. The guy had no one to help him before '92 and he still made it to the play-offs every year except for that 91 season where he had the "injury".

The guy was had unbelievable footwork and ability to pass the ball, which does not tend to come to centers "naturally".
Although I only saw video footage of Hakeem in his early career, it is doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure out that 93-95Hakeem was much better than Hakeem in the 80s.
