I'll give you a pass on that one. :)

I went to the imdb and looked up the Best Picture nominees since the Academy Awards bagan, and I am happy ot note that I've seen 72 of them, which seems like a lot, though that is out of over 400 movies,

I've seen 12 Best Picture winners - the last being Titanic, I saw only two in the theater (maybe three. I can't remember if I saw Amadeus in the theater or just on tape, but I know I saw Chariots of Fire and Forrest Gump in the theater).

I see a lot of movies (both at the theater and on video or on HBO and whatnot), but, for whatever reason, I often don't see the ones that end up nominated for Best Picture in any given year, and I almost never see the ones that win.

Yeah, you're right. It's kind of like Castaway, but set during the Holocaust with no volleyball for the hero to converse with. Still, it was one of the most affecting movies I saw all year (top 3 to be exact). I liked it for the same reason I liked Black Hawk Down so much. Their's virtually no preaching, and the portrayal of the actual events is moving enough.

I can see where you would get tired of seing then Max...

Im sorry, I havent been around to see it...Life intrudes..

I just tire of hearing people get attacked for stating what I feel should be an obvious fact, that just because you dont agree with the war or with what the Administration is doing, you are automatically labeled as Anti American, when in fact it is very possible to not like us being at war but still strongly love your country.

and, as if it needs to be said, I strongly believe that everyone that believes that has the right to say it. I just don't think it is right. but it doesnt take away your right to say it.

As for Moore, I recently read Stupid White Men...and Moore is stil highly pissed that Bush was(in his opinion) handed the White House on a platter. It should come as no surprise to anyone familiar with his work that he is bringin it up...again.

but....its his right...just as it's your right to hate him for it..

I think it's worthy of asking you a question, MM...Which, in your view, represents a closer adherence to the tennants of American idealism, the person who questions/criticizes their government even in times of war, or the person who calls that action un-American or un-Patriotic, and wishes that the person expressing it would ex-patriate? I am asking in all sincerity. And I would like to stipulate that, ues, you can possibly reconcile both, but which one is closer to the principles for which we stand?

From an LA Times piece about the Awards

Later in the broadcast, documentary feature winner Michael Moore began an attack on President Bush after winning the trophy for "Bowling for Columbine." He was promptly greeted by boos not only from the audience but also from many of the stagehands. As Moore's speech reached its crescendo, Cates and Horvitz decided in the production truck to cut him off.

"Music! Music!" Horvitz yelled. The orchestra quickly drowned out the rest of Moore's speech. As he walked backstage with his trophy in his hands, Moore heard even more criticism from the stagehands, one of whom came up to the filmmaker and told him in colorful language that he had a different opinion of the president.

Well, that's only a little more than twice as many. That doesn't make me feel too bad. :)

54 since the 1990 show. Jeez, I can't believe The Fugitive was nominated for Best Picture.

"I may disagree with everything you say...but I'll defend to the death your right to say it."

I don't have a problem with someone speaking up...but there is a certain amount of decorum expected. Particularly at an awards ceremony for film. I totally agree that the right to protest peacefully is HUGE!! I'd fight for it, no doubt. But just because you go up on stage and claim that the President is illegitimate, and thus all his actions are illegitimate doesn't make you a patriot. Not in the least. Just because you take advantage of rights doesn't mean you're a patriot.

At the same time, I don't want anyone to parrot responses, one way or another. In some of these polls, like 2-3% say they don't have an opinion on the war. Huh??? How can that be??? After 6 months of debate you don't have an opinion?? At all?? Nothing???

I don't know who this HACK is, but now he's a household name now for his ignorant comments...

I only heard about it this morning because I didn't want to get PO'd when people like him said their peace...

This is exactly why I'll do what Travis Tritt (Country Singer) said to do..."Hit em' where it hurts, don't buy there CD's, go to their movies, etc..."

    EXACTLY...

What always gets me are those people on those phone polls, where you pay like $2.99 or whatever to express your opinion on a given issue, and there is always something like 10-15% undecided...How desperate to express your opinion do you have to be to pick up the phone, make a call, and pay three bcuks to tell a complete stranger that, having considered the issue, you have nothing to say!?!?!?

the person who questions/criticizes their government even in times of war

as if there was any doubt

    question authority, always.

When you're calling people un-american simply because they don't agree with your president, that's not patriotism, that's ignorance.

unless of course ignorance is the American way.

25 for me since the 1990 show.

It is weird that The Fugitive was nominated. It was a good movie, but not what you'd expect to see on the Best Picture nominee list, at least not in the time it was nominated.

I did remember that Tommy Lee Jones won for The Fugitive, though.

I have bad news for you then.

This 'hack' was a household name before last evening.

He's growing more and more popular every day.

He's got the most successful book being published right now, and the most successful documentary of all time being showed in theaters across the country.

Not that boycotting will EVER take this guy down, because the people who would boycott his books and movies would never see or buy them anyway.

"No opinion" could mean that they have conflicting opinions so their opinion doesn't fit into one of the categories.

I'm torn on this war thing. I don't know that it was necessary, and I know there could be negative ramifications because of it, but I also know that ignoring threats can have dire consequences, as well.

Maybe Iraq never would've become a real threat. Maybe the inspections would've worked just fine in keeping him in check. On the other hand, maybe the inspections weren't working and maybe engaging in a war now saves lives in the long run. We don't know. We'll never know.

So, I could see how someone could be against the idea of the war on one hand but understanding that war is sometimes necessary and perhaps was in this case in order to save lives in the long term on the other.

And that could make that person undecided.

But then again, there are those people who pay $2.99 to make the call to say they have no opinion. Those people probably just are stupid. :)

Also, and this is just for my own personal curiosity ( sorry if it's already been addressed),,Free Agent...you say that, having seen what you consider to be his objectionable action last night, you will from this point on refrain from seeing or reading anything Michael Moore produces....Question: Which of his films or books have you previously seen or read? What did you think of them at the time?

I can appreciate a boycott of Michael Moore because the vast majority of his work is political in nature. I'll still never understand someone not watching Die Hard just because Bruce Willis is a Republican.

Or The Shawshank Redemption because Tim Robbins is an outspoken liberal.

Maybe skipping Bob Roberts is understandable, though.......

I have NO problem with people questioning anything our government does. It's just the way they do it. If someone disagrees, fine, let them say that. But when they start insulting the President, the leader of our country during a time of war. Then YES that is unpatriotic.

    example:

    #1 - "I don't agree with the Bush administration."

#2 - "I am ashamed of our President and I don't agree with him."

#1 is fine with me, #2 is just wrong in our present time. Have some respect for our President, the leader of the USA. I don't care if you disagree, focus on the facts and not the mudslinging. I know that neither side is innocent of this tactic though.
