I find it supremely ironic that our country has decided to fight a way to install democracy in another country, and that many of the same people who support the war want to suppress dissent within our own country because it makes them uncomfortable. Do the same thing I do with Rush Limbaugh and other right wing loonies, I don't listen to them at all anymore... :)

I'm disappointed that his movie was called a documentary. It had about as many sides presented as this thing:

Before you wake up tommorow to be bombarded by news anchors regailing you with horrific tales of the man that ruined the Oscar ceremony.. watch this video

what a novel idea, letting the man speak for himself, instead of having everyone else do it for him.

20 bucks says you won't ever see that video on the news, ever.

Just like how half of our country voted for the 2000 Presidential Election and how state and local levels turn up even less? Oops.

To Lie in the face of Roger Ebert

    Picking up a 'Bowling' split

    March 23, 2003

    BY ROGER EBERT Advertisement

I am sorry you had to reprint Internet crap in your column today. It is a lie to say anything but the following:

    1. I was handed that gun in that bank and walked out with it and have it in my possession to this day. I NEVER had to go to any gun shop. The scene happened just the way you saw it. I'd be happy to send you all the raw footage.

    2. The Columbine shooters DID go to the bowling alley that morning. I can supply you with the five witnesses, including their teacher. It's all there in the investigation conducted by the state of Colorado.

I don't understand why, after all these years, you would run stuff that wasn't true. It was hugely disappointing to read it.

    Michael Moore, Flint, Mich.

Moore is referring to my Oscar predictions piece, in which I wrote that his "Bowling for Columbine" was probably going to win the Oscar, and added: "...recent charges that he made up stuff probably won't hurt it, because somehow you know, watching it, that Moore has granted himself poetic license. So, OK, the Columbine killers didn't go bowling earlier that morning, as a news report falsely claimed. So, OK, that bank didn't hand you the rifle as a premium right there in the bank, but made you go to a gun shop to pick it up..."

His message does not precisely address the second item. I believe Moore was handed the gun right there in the bank, but I am not sure an average customer would have been. As for the first item, Moore has a disagreement with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office. According to Andy Ihnatko of Boston, who has been researching the film and talked to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, teachers and students at the class did not see the killers there, and they were marked absent. Moore, on the other hand, says he has five eyewitnesses. Currently, I am being copied on a voluminous correspondence between Moore and Ihnatko, with both sides citing persuasive information, and I confess that I cannot determine objective fact. All I know is that "Bowling for Columbine" is a brilliant polemic.

I have absolutely NO problem with him or anyone else "expressing their opinion". My problem comes with him doing it when are where he did it. At the very least he could have saved his tirade for the press conference that follows when the winners leave the stage.

What also bothers me is his acceptance/bash Bush speech will probably get more air time on the news than any of the winners combined.

I realize my "boycott" will mean very little to Moore but I guess I have to take some sort of stand. I did want to see Bowling for Columbine but that won't happen now.

I'll be interested to hear what talk show hosts like Rush Limbaugh and, locally, Chris Baker have to say about it.

Just following in the footsteps of everyone else involved.

As far as Michael Moore goes, I wish he was a little more eloquent. His speech sucked. His movies, however, are good, and his book "Stupid White Men", is a great read.

Michael Moore is a political activist who feels that this war is morally wrong. From stuff I've read he is was raised as a devout Catholic. He is not primarily an entertainer. His religion opposes this war. He is trying to act as best he can in light of his principles. This was his most important forum at the moment. It is seen thoughout the world. Given world opinion, he actually made the world think more highly of Americans.

Though his tone was even to me a bit shocking, he did the right thing. Any pain or discomfort he caused to the audience , the TV viewers or members of this bbs pales in comparison to the death and destruction of the Iraqis and American troops.

This issue is worth the relatively small pain of unpleasant political discusssions even if they disrupt an otherwise pleasant evening of entertainment by people who are choosing to be entertained (and I was) rather than follow the course of the war during those hours.

Could his style have been a bit better? I thought so at the time. Would it have been better if he had reduced it to the feel good, personal, non-political effort of the Pianist star, which was definitely more effective at the moment with the Oscar audience, I don't think so. The death that is going on is not the result of impersonal malice or evil, but political decisions made by one or two world leaders, with Bush the key .

Thinking about it the morning after, a denunciation of the war that was shocking in its tone was appropriate. My respect for Michael Moore has increased.
