Anybody who boos Hakeem for not re-signing with the Rockets is an imbecile. First, Hakeem is not merely the greatest Houston Rocket ever, or greatest Houston sports figure, he is the Moses (in the Biblical sense) of Houston sports. Second, Hakeem is doing the Rockets a favor by leaving from a financial and basketball standpoint. This issue is not about money, it's about Hakeem's pride. He understandably doesn't want to be put out to pasture against his will. It is this pride that made Hakeem and the Rockets champions. There is no "good old days" in history and there is no good old days regarding Hakeem's attitude. His pride, more than anything else, has been responsible for his accomplishments and for the feeling of disappointment many fans in houston feel towards him. I can't blame the Rockets, either. Hakeem's health, age and skill level doesn't justify a significant investment. Aside from historical value, or PR, Shandon Anderson, Moochie Norris and Mo Taylor are cummulatively are more important than Hakeem to the Rockets. -Elvis ------------------
I would never boo Hakeem even with a gun to my head. He will always be my favorite player even on another team. I can't say why Dream wants to bolt, I'm not the one involved in the contract negoiations, but I respect any decision he wants to make. Any Rockets fan that would boo Dream is not a Rockets fan. ------------------ the big E Summer Pro League Live Video and Pics
I've never been to a Rockets game before, but if I ever did, I wouldn't boo Hakeem, even if he was a Utah Jazz player. YES, I said that. ------------------
Before you boo Hakeem, realize that if not for his individual brilliance and competitive fire, the only banners hanging up in the Compaq Center would be those of the HOUSTON COMETS. Patrick Ewing got a standing ovation from the fans in NY last year. Hakeem deserves the same, regardless of how his ties are ending with the Rockets. ------------------ Get Cato out of there...
NY fans and Houston fans are different types of friends, wouldn't surprise me if he is booed (but I doubt it). ------------------
Did anyone boo Nolan Ryan when he signed, as a free agent, with the Rangers? The Astros only asked him to take a 20% pay cut, but that was considered such an insult that he couldn't possibly play for the Astros any longer. And McMullen was practically run out of town as a result. ------------------ A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory.
Oh, BTW, Nolan Ryan was 41 years old at the time. ------------------ A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory.
But Nolan was at the top of his game still. Hakeem has been retired for two years. ------------------
That says it all, 'Patch. Booing is a waste of (productive) energy. Unless of course we're talking Quitten. ------------------ Raef to Rocks in '01-'02! [This message has been edited by GATER (edited August 01, 2001).]
(a) I won't have any problem cheering against a team Hakeem is on, but I won't boo him in particular because he left Houston for another team. (b)I think he will thrive in the East where there are not any big men. (c)Personally I wish him the best of luck in getting to the Finals, and if the Raptors play the Lakers I'll root for Hakeem. (d) Nolan was not at the top of his game when he left. He benefited significantly from switching leagues where hitters did not know him, in a very similar way as Hakeem's move. Nolan would never have thrown those last no-hitters in the National League. ------------------
hey bob Hakeem's season last year was about the equivalent of Nolan's 1990 season and the Rockets (and Houston) are going to regret losing Hakeem just like Nolan. ------------------
If you boo Hakeem you're a worthless piece of ****, and not a real Rockets fan. It's people like you that make Houston a fair weather sports city... ------------------
No it isn't just signing Nazr to McCullough, if this doesn't drag on the Rockets might have been able to use the money they freed up with Dream walking to trade for a quality big man. Maybe Denver didn't want LaFrentz and would have taken a huge exception to free up cap space. Maybe other teams would have wanted to do that, you never know. ------------------ What if I say to you that the universe is a three-legged horse, eh? What then? - Russell Hoban
So Hakeem screwed us over b/c we couldn't trade for LaFrentz this last month? Now that Hakeem is gone we still can trade for a big man. I hope you're not saying that other teams were interested in a trade, but now they've lost interest after Dream's gone. I'm almost 90% positive that if the Rockets got a call from Denver this last month saying "Hey, we want to free up some capspace, interested in Lafrentz?", the Rockets would have renounced Dream that evening and made a deal with Denver. Dream didn't screw us over, it's not like we lost Mo, Moochie, or Shandon. ------------------ This post contains no smilies, you must judge my seriousness on your own... KNOCK ON WOOD! ------------------ "The girls danced, started fondling me, I got aroused, they performed oral sex," Ewing said. "I hung around a little bit and talked to them, then I left."
I won't even bother booing. I will be absolutely silent. Cheering shows respect, booing shows hatred, silence shows no emotion at all. ------------------ Mmm Queso.
