I would get a german shepherd. They are among the most intelligent and intensely loyal dogs there are. If they think their master is in danger they will lay down their lives to protect you. They are very loving too. Amazing animals. Why would anyone in their right mind want a pit bull?
Big update. I just got back from Wal-Mart. I found out later today that my gfs credit card was taken too and someone was charging like crazy at 4:30am so we checked it out. We got awesome surveilence photos and video for the cops and maybe a car shot tomorrow from the gas pump. The good news is I don't know them. It was just 2 younger looking black guys I've never seen in my life. They bought an X-BOX 360, which is really odd considering thats what they stole from me. I feel so much better just having seen their faces and knowing I have some evidence. I'm actually in a chipper mood. You smell that?..... its justice.
They might be buying it so they can swap yours with the one they stole and return it so it gets harder to trace.
A lot of black lab owners on this board. The only way my parents black lab would hurt a burglar is if she knocked them over to give them some wuv. All bark no bite. Did I type wuv?
My mother was at home, in the middle of the day when she was the victim of a home invasion. Her car was even in the driveway, but the thieves didn't care. I was a paranoid kid back then and installed some of those chain locks that emit a 110 db alarm when the door is forced open. When the guys kicked in the door, it went off, and they ran away... temporarily. When they realized it wasn't loud enough to hear from the street, they went back and destroyed the alarm, and started looting the place! Luckily the alarm bought my mother time to run into the bathroom and hide behind a shower curtain, and call police. I shudder to think what might have happened if they saw her. Unfortunately, the police didn't arrive until 3 hours later Soon afterwards, she bought a dog. Then a second dog. And then a third. The first two dogs were a German Shepherd/Chow mix and a Rottweiler mix, and the third is a little noisemaker (Cairn terrier).

Actually, there are... I used to live in one - and every last person who ever came to visit me in that complex got their car broken into. The gates don't do anything but keep the thieves INSIDE the damn place.... Provided the gates are actually working, of course.
I live on Riverside right now too...and three cars got broken into at my complex last week alone. Mind if I ask what complex you're at (or even what cross street)? I'm at Riverside and Crossing Place...
My ex gf and her brother were robbed by gunpoint in that area about 15 years ago. They knocked on the door and barged through with a small gun. They even knew his name when they knocked. Tied them up, broke his teeth, stole everything, and took off in his car. A cop tried to stop them over for speeding on 35 heading to SA, and they tried to outrun him and wrapped the car around the light pole. They got some of their stuff back but the car was totaled and he only had liability insurance so he was out of luck. Riverside is not a good area. Murders are rare in Austin, but stupid stuff happens all the time down SE austin.
Not to say I don't like guns but guns don't help much, I had a couple of friends that have been robbed with over ten guns in different areas of the house. Robbers sneak up on you and you have no chance to get to the guns. Its not like the movies. You don't know its happening until you are SOL. If you have guns in the house, they probably will be stolen too and even worse you may be shot with your own gun.
on that note, i once witnessed a homeless guy get shot in the head in the parking lot of my laundromat off west lynn. austin is still safer than houston though.
I shouldn't have opened this thread...last time I opened a thread on CF about someone getting robbed (somebody had their car broken into at the YMCA), my car was broken into that very night. If my apartment gets robbed tonight I'll know who to blame...
See this is why the day I moved into my house I bought a gun, even with it being aganist my family's wishes. I live in what is considered a desirable neighborhod in my town but man why take the chance.
