There are a couple bed and breakfast places in Wimberly that might fit the bill...if you want something more citified San Antonio fits the bill.

Strolling the ship channel is nice this time of year, before it gets hot.

    Showboat Drive in Movie Theater?

Definitely not worthy of a "day trip" , but if you're just looking for something new to do outside of the city you can hit that place up.

$5 to get in, and you can BYOB and your own snacks

This. Fredericksburg is very nice. Be sure to visit Becker Vineyard...good wine, and their tour is better than most.

My wife and I are doing Wimberly and San Antonio next week, we've done SA before but haven't been to Wimberly. Glad to hear someone say that it's a good destination...

    The wife & I go to at least 2-3 B&B's a year..Definitely go to a B&B

There are plenty in towns like

San Marcos (the river, town square, aquarena springs)

New Braunfels (the river, the river, Schllitterbahn, the river, Gruene hall)

Austin (the bats, the live music, south congress, the lakes, I highly recommend the Hyde Park Inn B&B)

Fredericksburg (B&B capital of Texas, lots of cool little shops in town)

    Tyler (eh..just someplace different)

San Antonio (whats not in S.A? The Alamo, Sea World, Riverwalk, etc)

Huntsville (Sam Houston State Park, Piney Woods, Big Sam, Huntsville Town square)

If you really want to drive..

Jefferson (has a million B&B's, several are supposedly haunted, take a swamp tour)

Denton (cool college city - 15min to a beach on Lake Ray Roberts)

Gainesville (cool little zoo, used to be a circus town..really)

Muenster (cute little German town near Gainesville/Frank Buck Zoo)

Llano (Lone Star Caverns, Enchanted Rock, I highly recommend staying at Walden Plantation)

Corpus Christi, better than Galveston and cheaper.

Had my honeymoon in Wimberly. Awesome place. Cypress creek cottages, google it.

Beaumont. They don't call it the Pearl to the East for nothing.
