You made it seem like you needed to gain 25lbs of muscle to even have a chance at making the team.

If you make the team, your S&C coach should be the one you ask about this, not CF.net

Here's my advice (some random guy on a message board).

Focus on dribbling. Focus on improving your game, and getting quicker. If your good enough, NOT STRONG ENOUGH, good enough - you will get playing time no matter where you end up. Working out is a part of it, but you don't need to bulk up in order to play college or even NBA level defense.

    This is basketball, not football.

    LOL!!!

Dude why are you bitter? I didn't even end up doing it!!

I'm not even telling this guy it's GOOD to do the drugs, I'm just saying that it's the only way he'll achieve a lean 25lbs, and as you can see, that's also the general sentiment here.

It's not a joke. I know this because I've been playing competitive sports for 10 years now, and I've had reconstructive knee surgery. What you're suggesting will make him slower, reduce his vertical, and allow his basketball skills to deteriorate. It's crazy.

You seem to feel the need to be rude... Is there something I'm missing? Seriously, I must have ticked you off somewhere because I don't understand your attitude.

Forget about bulking. I went from zero to hero after 3 months with these bad boys:

Keep them on at all times. In the shower, in the kitchen, in the club, it comes down to how badly you want it.

    ... no.

How old are you? If you're tall and lanky it's important to balance your center of gravity to become a better basketball player. Work on core exercises that hit the entire body like squats and deadlifts. Don't worry about your actual weight as much as adding strength and balance. Stay disciplined with your diet. Brown rice, lean free range chicken, eggs, lots of carbs and cals... protein shakes are overrated.

Actually I think his comment about the Strength and Conditioning Coach was a quality suggestion. It's kind of their job to bulk up the athletes they coach.

Obviously there's no harm in trying to build up some muscle mass, but unless you plan on working out under the guidance of a personal trainer and nutritionist, you would be best to spend more time on basketball drills with a regular workout routine.

To me, it just doesn't make sense to try and gain a massive amount of bulk weight expecting to make an immediate impact without diminished basketball skills.

Have you considered the option that many first year college athletes are red shirted for gaining/losing weight -- but also to hone their skills. I don't mean to be a dick, but have you even been heavily recruited and offered by a Division I school or are you expecting to walk-on and earn a scholarship (which is still an excellent and achievable goal to aim for)?

Even though I could probably help you out, the hell if I'm going to now.

You're not doing yourself a lot of favors with your attitude.

    Best of luck.

Thanks for the well written suggestions/opinions, Exactly what I was looking for. +Rep.

I have Division 1 offers that I'm mulling over. I am in contact with several strength coaches, but I wanted to see what CF's had to say..

    That is all...

Well since you've got offers, that's definitely commendable. You wouldn't deny that you're (currently) "undersized" for your height, which is precisely why you want to bulk up. However it would be somewhat-to-very unrealistic to expect to be an impact player your first year at the highest level of college basketball (not impossible of course).

Without knowing where your offers are from or what your preference would be, if it were me I would go for the best fit of academics, scholarship attainability, and playing time -- in that order.

Playing time would, logically, increase if you go to a lower-level or small conference school. At the same point, the team/coach might not be the quality as some of the more well-known schools. I would venture to guess you aren't necessarily being recruited by some of the big boys like UConn or Texas (no offense) given your current build, but of course your playing time would be even more in jeopardy at the bigger schools.

It really depends on what you want to get out of college ball -- playing time or willing to do "whatever" to win (even if it means sitting on the bench). I think your attitude of viewing this as an opportunity for a scholarship is commendable, and should be your top priority at the best school possible.

How you define "best" should help in your decision given the opportunity to play ball at the next level with the chance at securing an invaluable education.

I got those when I joined the football team in 9th grade. Quite the shocker at the time. I guess my body didn't handle all the weight lifting that came with the sport well. I got em near my biceps and triceps, on my sides, on my upper legs, and in my stomach area.

And, the kicker is they never, ever go away. I wish I would have known about them in advance...or I would never have joined the team. I didn't even get that big really. I wonder how bad it would have been if I seriously bulked up?

It's not that bad...but still...nobody wants that crap.
