I thought Doug Collins was supposed to be a terrible coach?

Taking my "subpar" comment and defining it as a "Collins sucks" comment is a little disingenuous.

I consider him to be at least slightly below average, but I wouldn't, haven't, won't say he sucks.

0.473 is below 0.500 last I checked, and it's in the East with Indy and the Bobcats at right below them.

Unless he's the reason Elton Brand has started playing like 70% of what he was in LA instead of 50%, I stand by my comment.

"Subpar" = bad. Not that disingenuous.

It's interesting that you use the winning percentage of the team to measure the coach's aptitude. By that measure, only coaches of successful teams are any good. Do you stand by that measuring stick?

    Grab a dictionary:
    http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/subpar?r=75
    –adjective
below an average, usual, or normal level, quality, or the like; below par: This month his performance has been subpar.

If Olajuwon was off his game a little one night and gave you 19-8, you'd say he was subpar that night.
If Olajuwon went 4-15 and got 12-6....you'd say he was bad.

I spelled out pretty explicitly what I meant, sorry it doesn't fit your agenda.

I judge Collins by his body of work, by how much he got out of the potential of each of his teams, over his career, not based off a half season with his latest one.

He didn't screw teams up or hold them back, but he never got the best out of them - Bulls...Pistons...Wizards...if I'm feeling generous, I'd describe him as run of the mill.

But if he's blowing your mind in Philly by rising to the cream of the mediocre crop, power to you.

The dictionary definition doesn't specify an amount "below average", so there's a lot of room for interpretation there. One can assume that subpar does in fact = "bad". I think the Cavs this year could be categorized as "subpar" - do you disagree? I would say most people equate "subpar" with poor.

But let's go with your clarification instead, that he didn't get the best out of his teams. Which of his Bulls teams did he not get the best out of? I guess you thought those teams were in fact better than the repeat champ Pistons? He didn't get the best out of the Pistons in '97 with 54 wins? He was holding back the Jordan-era Wizards?

Collins has a career .532 winning percentage. His peak (regular) season actually wasn't with Jordan but with Grant Hill. Those teams were crappy to watch other than Hill, but they won a lot of games.

    Playoff record of only 39%.

Overall, I would say he has an above average record as a coach.
