i think my neighbor is stealing my gas...need advice for revenge scheme

so the OP is a a dick for wanting to exact revenge on a thief? the neighbor is causing problems for the OP, regardless if it's a $10 gas can. no one should be taking someone else's property. it doesn't matter if you're poor or not. the neighbor's act alone is justification for making his life worse. unfortunately, it could also affect his wife who has nothing to do with it.

 

Red paint on the gas can handle - will make his hand red. Besides the potential for the obvious joke, it won't damage anything he can sue you for.

You could also get one of the motion-activated halloween things to scare the **** out of him.

 

He's a lazy piece of **** thief.

go for publicly shaming him vs. exacting revenge.

make him an embarrassment to the community and FORCE him to own up for what he has done.

why dont you just buy or build your self a small storage box or cabinet, put what ever you may not want stolen in there and lock it.

The problem with calling the cops, as stated by the OP, is that there really isn't solid proof. If his neighbor is not stealing from him, then there won't be any escalation if he leaves a can of diesel on his back porch. If his neighbor is actually stealing from him (in addition to borrowing money, not cleaning his yard, being a generally bad neighbor), then the diesel can might be a way to prove it, or just give him just desserts.

Confronting him professionally might work, but can also backfire if he doesn't respect or fear you and doesn't act professionally himself.

It's unfair to blame to OP for thinking of schemes. How many of you deal with this type of crap and just take it? There's homeless people and illegal immigrants who hang around my business. Some are asses and some are nice. It's a tricky situation because I'm not a cold-hearted b*stard, but it's difficult to strike a balance of when to be friendly, when to be aggressive, when to be dismissive...there is a real effect on business of having too many homeless and too many illegals looking for work hanging around.

OP has to live with this neighbor next to him, and sure he could do nothing or call the cops, but would it really deter his neighbor from continually being a thief? OP, you're not being an ass by thinking with vengeance, just be careful. I hope whatever you decide to do works.

well put. people call police all the time on rowdy neighbors, it doesn't solve anything. and the OP can't exactly press charges without proof not to mention its over a gas can. i'm all for solving this in a civil manner but again, if he's a thief he's going to get even more agitated that the OP accused him of it.

 

Yeah..Calling the cops isn't gonna get anything done. At the most they would just talk to him and then it gets awkward. So really, unless the OP catches him in the act or can provide solid evidence, no point in calling the cops. 911's idea seems like the best one so far since he's not really harming his car and he gets caught, but I dunno, seems like even then the neighbor might not even know he's busted.
