the stros never gave those guys enough run support. i don't blame them for signing with yanks, but clemens does suck this year. he probably would have been about 2-8 if he had signed with the 'stros.
I'm well aware of what both sides said publicly. And I have no doubt that the Astros believe they are telling the truth.
I think Brad Lidge would be in a seriously mental state right now had we signed Andy. Can you image how many more heart-breaking, gut-clenching saves he would have blown by now?
I admit that I was OK with passing on the 2-year deal for Pettite. It just seemed like a lot of money for a guy that is aging and a history of recent arm troubles. The problem with trying to hold the line on a guy like Pettite is that you have very poor options to get someone else to fill that spot. You either have to reach on a free agent (i.e Woody) or give up decent young talent and take your chances via trade (i.e. Jennings). Neither move worked out well for the 'Stros, and they'll be faced with the same dilemma again this off-season. I know Pettite is on a hot streak now, but I remember quite a few people flaming him and the Yankees earlier this year when they were both struggling. We can't have it both ways.
Actually, Pettitte has been good all season for the Yankees save for a few bad starts in the middle. His only problem early in the year was (wait for it...) run support.
Anybody else think re-signing Pettite and Clemens would have been worse for this franchise then letting them go? Last year, they couldn't help this team get to the playoffs, what guarantee would there have been that they would help them get back to the postseason this year...especially considering Berkman's (and the rest of the offenses) struggles early on as well as the bullpen collapses...at most they may have been right back at .500. And signing them would have only delayed the inevitable disaster of a season the team is experiencing now. But by letting two players go who were in the twilight of their careers, the team (probably unknowingly at the time) would be forced to head in a new direction.
Don't laugh: my Mom has a wicked slider with good movement that fools most right-handed batters. Plus she makes a mean chicken fried steak.
