Its like not reading books reading books after choosing to stop reading the National Enquirer and Maxim. Airwaves, promotion & distribution is not the same as music. Nothing wrong with making a buck off music, but the big industry commercialization is so tied in we sometimes forget the independent expression of music can come from anywhere.

Theres irony in how moderating and filtering out what you hear, limiting what you take in can be a step to opening up broader awareness. Sometimes we cant afford the external storage and have to clean out the existing drives to make space I guess.

It looks like some people here just forgot what it's like to be slappin' da bass man.

    Slappin' da baaaas!

    Slapping daaaa bass mon!

I encourage you all to go home, turn it up, and slappin' da beaaaaeess! (No, that's not a euphimism for something else, but you can do that other thing to music too.)

I don't think listening to music will make you dumber, but I did read a study about how most people jump from station to station from different types of music to another and how most people don't listen to a full song... and how this is linked to developing ADHD. Your brain never has very long to focus on one particular thing.... I relate this to reading bbs message boards. You jump from topic to topic, opinion to opinion and read short bursts of information so your brain loses the training to focus on one particular thing.

Take a music bath once or twice a week for a few seasons. You will find it is to the soul what a water bath is to the body.

Music is what feelings sound like.

    YOU ANIMAL!!!

No no no, sorry I gave the wrong impression!

It's worked for me. But I can't read or write or do ANYTHING while listening to music, so that was definitely a factor. That's not the case for all people though.

Also, I was listening to a lot of crap. But I thought 20% of what I was listening to was crap but after I stopped, I came to the realization that 90% of it was crap. I do understand that crappy music is subjective though.

Maybe smarter was a poor choice of words. There are songs that I listen to which really move me, make me smile, motivate me to help people, etc, and those songs will stay.

But what I'm saying is that when I cut out the music and the tv channels, and advertisements and reality tv and music shows and a lot of MOVIES even.. I felt like I started thinking significantly clearer than before.

It may be a mental thing, but I was stuck in a rut, and it really rejuvenated me.

I guess the way you can look at it is that I tried to format all media from my brain, and then became super selective about what to download/install into my brain again.

Whereas, I can see that not even was in my predicament to begin with. But I do recommend that you try cutting yourself off from media/news for 3 days. I'm sure many people experience this relaxation when they go camping or something. But it was extremely refreshing to me and I just thought I'd mention it as an experience which might interest others..

Didn't mean to insult anyone! I'm a guitarist myself, so I wouldn't insult all musicians like that. :)

Oh and I noticed a lot of people commented on this so..

Talk radio would only be while I'm driving somewhere and if it's something I'm interested in..

Sports radio would be sports news... I don't think there even are any sports talk shows here lol...

You shouldn't quit music, you just need to quit bad music.

A wise man once said, no, it was me; I said "I don't know what music is but I know the more of it you have in your life the happier you will be"

I can't say what music is good for you, but that stuff that's about slappin' b****es and cappin' cops, yeah, that shXt will drag you down.

Try some Beethoven, Miles Davis, Ry Cooder, Eric Johnson or Muddy Waters

Exactly. Stop listening to 50cent and put some jazz in your diet. You will get smarter. That stuff rots your brain.

I think there have been studies that have shown that musical training improves math scores and also that babies who listen to classical music later show a quicker grasp of mathematical concepts. Complex, polyphonic music is essentially a combination of sounds at various ratios and intervals, so repeated listening to this kind of music will increase you ability to sense the same in math.

Unfortunately, too much modern popular music is essentially monophonic, which means the average person isn't going to get much benefit from it.

I can understand what the OP is trying to say...I think. I know if I'm studying or reading, I either turn off music or play some piano music. Its usually piano or orchestra renditions of Radiohead or The Beatles or something. I just find it less distracting.

I have gotten to where I watch very little TV and I think that has been a great move. I only watch when I know what I'm sitting down to see. Even shows I like, I usually just check them out on DVD. I concur with the earlier poster who said it is a time vampire. I was reading a book on time and the perception of it and the case was made for TV.

While time flies when you're having fun, when you look back on it that time seemed longer because everything that took place. When you're bored and time is drags on, you'll later see this as a short period of time because of how little you recall of it. Watching TV is one of the only times when time flies and later it seems like a short times looking back. The ultimate time waster. Anyway I digress.

As for music, I could never give it up. I posted a thread a couple of months ago about falling in love with songs and I really meant it. The feeling I get when listening to some music is transcendent. The really great songs get their hooks in and don't let go. I may find it and bump it to add more to the list. I could easily understand the perils of Sirens. If the song's right of course.

I really don't understand how anyone could be against music. For a long time half of me felt it could be the language of the universe. Of course the other part of me says its math, but music could be something all beings enjoy. You would have to factor in difference in frequency recognition and all probably, but as far as rhythm goes I'm sure the fundamenals are there. Thats if you believe we're not alone of course, but thats a topic for another thread. ;)

I do listen to everything (except country). Had a healthy dose of Jazz/funk in my diet. No problem with the variety.

Some songs I feel drag me down. Like a someone whining about losing a girl for 4 minutes. What do I have to gain from that? He's not saying anything bad and he's not wrong, but why would I want to listen to someone whining about that?

I just want it to be positive. I want it to be something the average joe can't replicate (uniqueness). Something which I can put on for positive motivation. A message to my community. Something like that.

I think of music as an energy now. I am very concerned about overusing it and about the quality of the music. I want the energy to be used at the right times and in its purest form to have the best effect.

Again, cutting out 50 cent etc was a given. But imagine going from thinking 20% of your music needs to be cut out to 80or 90%?? It's only when I stepped completely out of it for a while that I was able again to distinguish between the good, bad, positive, negative, etc..

I did the same for months and felt so much better. I began to meditate and read more rather than waste time on meaningless tv shows, movies, sports talk, etc. My mind felt so sharp, I had a joy and confidence about me that attracted people, and I began to have lunch with random people who I would meet at the restaurant. I had no cares/worries, wasn't self aware and nervous like before about anything.

Music/media/tv, etc all have effects on our mind and soul, if you listen to music or watch images about drugs, violence and sex, etc, that's what your soul and mind will project. After feeling so good I fell back into the trap of listening to the crap I was before and watching tv and now I've slid back abit to my old unhappy self but I am starting to cut it out again and hope to reep those benefits again.
