I dont get this, so you think he will not make any trades to improve the team, because he wants to draft something good. and how long in the future you mean, because then morey wouldnt want to draft a good player, because that will make the rockets better, and then in two years he wouldnt get a high pick? I dont get it.
Right. Earlier I said "At least the Celtics dealt their developing picks for Kevin Garnett". Can include Ray Allen in that. Can also mean all their previous years of tanking didnt do anything, so might as well go for established players. I actually dont think thats always the best method to follow cuz its can be shortsighted. Hornets dealt teenage Kobe for Vlade Divac. You can argue Rudy Gay for Shane Battier was shortsighted. I guess my issue is when do you decide to call a season off, from the beginning or midway. When is the decision made to be semi-competitive Teams are going to keep tanking regardless. On lottery day when a team wins the #1 pick, the big smiles from team management of a season well tanked are apparent.
Let's see... a true fan would want us to sneak into the playoffs with a #8 seed and then get clobbered. Whereas only a "fake" fan would want us to go 33-49, snag a hot draft pick, and win consecutive titles in 2011 and 2012? So what you're saying is... true fans are stupid?
Who do you want for the championship run, Adam Morrison, Tyrus Thomas? Shelden Williams, Randy Foye? Patrick O'Bryant, Saer Sene? JJ Redick, Hilton Armstrong? All drafted in the top 12 in '06. Brandon Roy, Rudy Gay, Lamarcus Aldridge, Andrea Bargnani being the good players in the top 12. "Oh lets get one of THOSE guys!" I know there's never a sure thing and there's risks you gotta take in everything. But for every Kevin Durant you get a Mike Conley, Brandan Wright and Acie Law. Team still better have a good strategy in mind besides hoping for a good lotto ball bounce is all I'm saying.
Prove to me that the pick we would get after going 33-49 would lead to us winning consecutive titles. That's a ridiculous assertion. We aren't going to get a late round lottery pick that leads us two back-t0-back championships. We will have more luck going after known commodities, but out cap situation isn't good enough to go snag a Lebron, Wade, or Melo.
Not exactly win titles(unless we draft top 5 ) but having a higher chance(by having a high Draft pick) to draft a young talented cheap asset(Cole Aldrich C, Greg Monroe PF/C, Avery Bradly PG/SG, etc) with high potential to develop which would allow us to make possible future moves....It's better than getting swept in the first round, or Barely missing the playoffs and having a mid to low pick....peace out!! --RB
It's basically two sides of the same coin. The Rockets are short a franchise player right now. They have none (no, Yao does not count. Especially when he is not playing). And further, I personally don't see them (or anybody) being able to replicate the success of early 2000's Pistons and being able to excel without a true superstar. Those Pistons seem like the exception that proves the rule. So they can either hope the stars align and a franchise player becomes available via FA or trade, or hope to grab one in the lottery. I don't know, off the top of my head, which is a more likely possibility. I'd actually like to see some data on that if somebody smart could track this info. (Franchise player acquisition based on Trade/FA vs. Drafting)
Yeah I saw that to.... In my very first click of "play lottery" I got the rockets with the 1st pick (despite its .06% chance of landing the first pick  ) -RB
I don't know how some of you guys are so sure we will draft a "franchise player" with the 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, or 15th pick. Sure, there are a few exceptions but most of the late lottery picks usually turn out to be decent NBA players but not "franchise players".
You should really look at the link you just posted. If anything you've made my argument for me. The link you quoted has us picking Patrick Patterson. In his scouting report it says "He isn't going to be a superstar, but he has the talent to be a surefire NBA role player." That doesn't even mention the fact that he's a power forward, i.e. our strongest position. Wow...yeah...it's much better to lose to get a player who has the potential to be a roleplayer than to take a team full of roleplayers to the playoffs and build their experience.

Yeah, I was there I saw it in person. Yet, you, the person who wants us to tank for a franchise player, have conveniently missed the part of the post where we are projected to draft a role player.
That is assuming we stay exactly where we are for the remainder of the season. The Rockets are struggling with injuries right now. Yes, I am referring to Brian Cook. Alright jokes, but in all seriousness -- The rockets are tied for 9th with New Orleans and OKC now that Memphis has officially stepped into the playoffs as the 8th seed. Say what you will, but the Grizz (Gasol, ZBO, Mayo, and Gay) are legit. With OKC's Durant, Green, Westbrook coming into their own its hard to see them losing any steam. The only team I see us being able to consistently stay ahead of in the rankings are the Hornets because of all the franchise disarray they continuously find themselves. Regardless, the Rockets are going to have to find that scrappy team that had the league scratching their heads in the beginning of the season just to grab hold of the 8th seed. So, with all of that in mind its very possible we find ourselves with a better position that 12. With a draft as strong as this one, that is huge. Cole Aldrich? Wesley Johnson? and I spent 10 minutes of my day rolling the draft lotto until the Rockets with a 0.6% chance won the John Wall sweep stakes. Getting a little off topic here with draft excitement, but you must realize being anywhere in the lotto with DM steering the ship is sure to net us something more than a meager roleplayer. Look at what Morey has done with 2nd round picks, much less the tier 1 guys. I'm not saying we should tank, but if we miss playoffs I will not be all that disappointed. I think everyone needs to recall their expectations at the beginning of the season and not get too crazy about a playoff push Disclaimer: all bets are off with a blockbuster trade.
I really don't get your "experience" argument......dowe not have enough playoff experiences already??? We haven't been knocked out of the 1st round enough?? We don't have enough veterans whos crashed out of the playoffs time and time again already? If anything we need more experience in the LOTTERY!!! Ariza- Gotten a ring already Battier- gotten to the playoffs again and again and yet has done nothing Brooks- Been there twice and starred in last year's one Hayes - Old veteran whos been through our playoff pains Scola- veteran whos as experienced as they get Landry - 3 playoff series where he played a key role in his rookie and sophomore seasons we need to get to the lottery!!! No matter how many times we make the playoffs...we are not gonna gain ANYTHING from that if we don't have a shot at winning it all
yeah no offense but your about the most ignorant person to post in this thread so far. i said i see this team collapsing maybe all the way down to the 7th pick . if we continue though to trade off wins and losses and hover just out of a playoff spot there is a great chance that all we would have the ability to draft would be a roll player. but at the 7th spot we have not only a better chance at a good player but also about 1 in 4 or 1 in 5 chance to move into the top 3 picks. so to summarize the point i was trying to make is i dont want to draft a "patterson" and i see this team running out of gas and going through a big slump in my opinion. thats also not tanking. its called having 2 max players in no way helping the team. one maybe hurting the team because of the trade rumors. and no size in the front court to speak of.
