Evolution may be many things, but it is NOT random. Also, note that evolution is NOT abiogenesis. Evolution simply explains a process how complexity can be generated from simplicity. It does NOT explain the origin of life. All these statements below are facts: - Organisms reproduce and leave offsprings. - During reproduction, genes are reshuffled and mutated, thus creating offsprings different from the parents and each other. - These variations matter in terms of their relative survival in the environment. - The variations that survive reproduce more offsprings. - There's limitless amount of environment possible in the world. You run this process for billions of years, and you get evolution. That's it. There's no controversy. It's worth noting that the human mind is terrible at comprehending large time scale. Yes, we can comprehend 100 years, but once you start increasing the order of magnitude to millions and billions, the brain simply comprehends it as "truckload of crap." Perhaps this explains why people have trouble accepting evolution. As for ID being shut out in academia, just imagine if some physicist starts espousing the theory of "intelligent falling" in alternative to the theory of gravity. His tenure would be revoked on the spot.
Very well put and I wish more people would understand what Evolution is and what it isn't. For instance I've debated with ID proponents before who said Evolution was flawed because it couldn't explain the origin of matter.
