I remember being chosen to "stear the boat" on The River of No Return. Do you remember that part where the guide told you to turn one way but the boat went the other way--in the "no return" direction? That's when I resigned as the boat-stearer. More accurately, that's when I ran to my mom crying.
Okay, I guess I'm supposed to feel young because of not knowing who Chicago, Kansas, America and Alabama are, but I do remember (vaguely) Atari, Smurfs, and I was about seven when my grandparents bought us a Nintendo. It was the gift pack, with two controllers, the three-in-one game, and the running pad for the track thingy... - My brother and I would get down and pound on it with our hands to make the guy go really fast! He would beat Chee-tah!!! However, we did a lot of these things when I was a kid because we lived in a little town. In the summer when it was really hot, in the evening I would go around the block and pop the tar bubbles that would boil up a little bit in the sun during the day. The road would be warm still. I would sit out there with my books and make a mess out of myself. I would also ride my bike up and down trails near the train tracks with my brother and his friends. While I may be of a slightly younger generation, all fun things were not totally lost on us. It must be difficult raising a child in the city with all the advantages that we had as younger kids, but I think in smaller towns, where we don't have to deal with constant traffic or actually needing a cellphone, that the 'golden' age isn't completely extinct. Of course, most of the other kids in my town started smoking pot around the age of 12 (which was after the Gulf War started)... Damn punk-kids...
For years and years. Ooooh, my Dad would get so mad if we took those pliers to use somewhere else and not returned them!! How about putting up Christmas lights that were as big as regular light bulbs, not these tiny things they have now. And if one burned out, you simply unscrewed it (yes, the screw in type) and put in another. Or Don Mahony and Jeanna Claire? Or the original Batman, with Adam West and Burt Ward? Or Dialing for Dollars?
Didn't you read my post (first one on page 2 of this thread)? Of course I remember Godzilla week. My personal favorite was Godzilla vs. the Smog monster. I also remember when Channel 39 used to show movies all day on Sunday and that the 1PM movie was usually a classic Universal monster flick. Channel 39 also used to show The Texas Chainsaw Massacre at least once a year. I used my parents' 1975 wood-panel Sony Trinitron TV (13 channels in VHF, up to I belive 56 in UHF) until I moved out of my house in the Heights in 2000. No cable, but the picture was still great.
ahahahhahaha!! they would have like dance recitals on tv, every sunday! "It's the Don Mahony & Jeanna Claire Show...!"
Wait just a damn minute there BobFinn, I was born in 82 and I am a sophomore in college. There's a huge difference there bub Well, I'm gonna try and date myself, or make you guys feel even older by pointing out what I do remember from your list. I remember Reagan and I remember for some reason I was with Dukakis in 88, though it's not like I understood politics when I was 6 yrs old Atari and vinyl does predate me, but I have said the phrase "You sound like a broken record" many times. I wonder why there isn't a "you sound like a scratched CD" phrase yet??? I have played Pac Man and Mrs. Pac Man many times. Pong too except on emulators. I know what an 8 track is. The price of stamps has changed more than once in my lifetime. Didn't have an answering machine till college, but we did have an asnwering service. . . Didn't have cable until 94. BETA, I remember BETA. My unlce had one and a camcorder that used BETA tapes. I remember watching Rambo 2 and 3, Jaws, and my favorite movie growing up, The Delta Force on BETA. Remember Laser Discs? I know that there was a time we didn't have a remote, but they have always existed in my life time. Where's the beef was already famous I guess, "I've fallen and I can't get up," was that for one of those medical alert bracelets or necklaces? "De plane boss, de plane!" The first time I heard that was on a Looney Toons parody, on laser disc. I hated that show Dallas. Every time the theme song started up, I knew that there was nothing good on tv. I remember buying a book about the discovery of the Titanic in elementary, but I guess that happened a few years before hand. I started roller skating before inline was cool, after inline was cool, I stopped. I watched and taped the last episode of the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. I know Jackson wasn't always white, but I guess he's always been plastic in my lifetime. I owned Jordache jeans and a Jordache backpack. I know that Kansas, Chicago, Boston, America, and Alabama where bands, but I think they sucked. Eat that old man!!! I've used a typewriter and a word processor, I know how they work just fine. I saw Larry Legend play, just never in person. Ok my generation, let's talk about all the cool shiznit that we had that younger people today were deprived of. Thunder Cats, He-Man, Voltron, G I Joe, the Smurfs, Garfield, Heathcliff, Inspector Gadget, and a bevy of other awesome ass cartoons. I too bought the nintendo gift set with 2 controls, 3 games in one, and the game pad for track and field. Hey, who remembers Sega Channel? Remember the first Batman movie, before Joel Schumacher fudged up the series. Remember when whatching toons on Saturday morning, they used to do the clay thing on abc withe singers, "After these messages we'll be riiiiiiiiiight back!" and their heads would roll off and end up on another persons body. The California Raisins Pee Wee's Fun House Bush: "Read my lips, no new taxes." I'm getting bored, so I'll submit this now. Did anybody in Houston ever go to Pistol Pete's Pizza?
Refman you went to Klein Forest? What year did you graduate? I graduated from KF in 2000 but I know a few people that graduated in the years before me.
How funny. I was about 8 and they made me steer it. I knew it was BS, so it pissed me off when the guy started yelling at me to turn the wheel harder.
Now we're getting into shows? Batman, sure. How about Lost in Space, Land of the Giants (never could understand why my Dad didn't like those ), The Green Hornet, Love American Style, Laugh In, Get Smart, The Sonny and Cher Show.
Wow I remember most of those Astroworld rides..I haven't been in probably 15 years but my 10 year old has been bugging me about going ,so probably this summer. Dexter Freebish was our favorite because you never had much of a line, not like the Cyclone. You could get off and be back on relatively fast. Did anyone else used to reach out and touch the metal to see if it would shock you ? ..or try and grab weeds and grass when it went through that one low banking turn ? We would always have cuts on our hands trying to see who could grab a weed.
Anyone remember "Capt. Harold's Theatre in the Sky"? Anyone ever go to the Ranger Drive-in on Telephone Rd. before they leveled it to build 610 by Gulfgate? Mmmm... chicken-fried steak sandwiches and dip-fries. The best in town. Curb service. (I miss it! )
Does anyone remember what they did yesterday? i can't. I must be getting old. What were we talking about?
