huh?? Halo 1 had a ton of hype. as much as Halo 2? no but certainly a lot more hype than any other random run-of-the-mill game
Really? When I bought my XBOX on launch day, I never heard of it. I sat there for 2 hours at EB trying to figure out which game to get with my new system. I only got Halo because it allowed my brother and I to play co-op. I bought it HOPING it was decent. This one I'm not overly excited about and I'm not sure why. I have it preordered and will get it on it's release but I'm not overly anticipating it. Hopefully that means I'll be blown away when I actually get to play it. It will be great to play it co-op online though. Now, NBA2K8, I'm counting the days!!!
Considering that it was the first game in a franchise that nobody had ever played on a console - I find that hard to belive. There is a mixed definition of hype here, which I take to mean something before the fact. What Halo 1 received was not hype, what it got was accolades and critical acclaim AFTER it delivered the goods, which is why its recognized as one of the great console games of its era.
I write for TechRepublic, but this one might go out on CNet as they own TR and their reviewer couldn't make it, opening the spot for me.
wtf??? hold on...so by that definition, are you implying that NO game that is the first in a franchise can have, or has had, hype? I mean that's ludicrous, there are plenty of games that fit that example as for Halo 1, I know for sure I knew about the game way beforehand, and so did a lot of people I know. I mean don't yall remember the fact that there was a huge controversy from the PC gamers when it went to MS and Xbox exclusive only...originally it was going to be a Bungie PC game that already had a lot of hype on its own. that's why everyone was pissed when the deal went down with MS
I remember how ****ty the single player in Halo was because I had just gotten done playing Half Life. It was soooo freaking repetitive. The coop and MP were cool though.
halo 2 got hype. halo 1 got acclaim for being awesome. i had barely heard of halo when i got my xbox, that of course changed after i actually played it. i owe halo 1 for getting me into first person shooters on consoles, and i bet a lot of other people feel the same.
Doom got me started...didnt play wolfenstein. Maybe thats why it takes a special 1st person game to be me excited now in days. and HL3 was great. the last 1st person game that had me hooked. I like the way bioshock is looking but havent played it yet
yeah but you're talking about pc shooters right? i played doom, wolfenstein, and half-life before halo was ever even thought about, but i never got into a console shooter until halo. they never could get the controls to feel close to as smooth as a mouse and keyboard, but halo changed that. it was pretty much perfect.
On a console that didn't exist before the gmae came out? Yes, I'm saying that it is in fact, hard, to generate a lot of 'hype' for a franchise that never existed, on a console that hadn't existed, made by a company that had never made a console before. Now, I'm sure Halo was heavily promoted and marketed by Microsoft beforehand, but that's not the same thing (not to mention the fact that whatever hype it got, it obviously exceeded by about a million times over, given the enormous critical and commercial success...and the fact we're still talking about it today).
I do. I had vaguely heard about Halo and never even played it until I got my system a year or so after it's launch. Now Halo 2 and 3...a lot of hype...but rightfully so imo. I can think of one game that seemed to get a lot of hype for being the first in its franchise...Killzone was touted as the Halo killer, which it never seemed to live up to...though it is a pretty good game.
