First, let me get hate or karla out of the way, because it's not on that level yet.

Whether he makes 14m or 14k makes little difference. The point is, he should understand he doesn't have the right to pick and choose which team he plays for when traded after he enter that contract. He should just accept his part of the responsibilities, play hard whereever he lands and try to win over fans.

He can voice his opinion/influence as his first amendment right, but that does make him a whining baby - especially if he says he'll play in O only if shaq goes there.

    he didn't??? that's the way i heard it...maybe i misunderstood it too??

either way, he and his agents made it pretty clear he didn't want to play there...and his agents went on to say that if mcgrady has choices about where he wants to play, so should steve. of course, the problem with that is steve is inked to a long-term deal which both he and his agents are enjoying the fruits of.

    wrong,

Francis: Orlando? Only If Shaq Comes Too

Steve Francis tells Houston station that he's only interested in playing for the Magic if Shaquille O'Neal comes to Florida as well

The Rockets are poised to deal Steve Francis and others to Orlando for Tracy McGrady, and clearly Francis isn't too thrilled about potentially being dealt to the Magic.
Francis told Fox 26 in Houston that he would only play for the Magic if Shaquille O'Neal is traded there.

"Earlier today I had a conversation with Shaq," said Francis. "We both discussed the Orlando situation. The only way I think I play for Orlando ... if Shaq plays for Orlando I think I will, but as of right now I'm not even looking at that."

Francis told Mark Berman that he doesn't hold anything against the Rockets organization or the city of Houston.

"I respect the Rockets organization for what they are trying to accomplish," said Steve. "I respect the city of Houston so much. But at the same time, people want to do different things and right now that's the position they're in and that's the position we're in."

But clearly Steve preferred to stay in Houston.

"Last year to me was taking a step to get to the championship, to the playoffs. To move to another team, of course there is disappointment. But at the same time, the NBA is a business, and I respect the business so much that I can't be mad at anybody."

Well, he only needs to tell that to the GMs involved, not the press, if he's smart enough ;)

What's pretty sad is that Steve's been through this before. You would think he'd be smart enough to temper his comments after the backlash he got when he entered the league.

It's not asif he had no idea his off-hand comments would be blown out of proportion.

    But thats professional sports.

that story doesnt directly jibe with what I have heard with my own ears.

go to the link in my sig....scroll down to the Tmac Trade talks post...and listen to the two reports from Berman and listen to the interviews with Steve and his agents in both the ones from 6/21 and 6/23

take it from the horses mouth...not from some media reports.

More than likely Francis had the option for a no trade clause limiting him to a lesser contract. He probably chose the longer contract with more money that did not include the no trade clause, but now he wants to have his cake and eat it too.

Every NBA contract (save for a few) reserves a right for the team to trade the contracted player at any point as they see fit.

It is just as simple as that. Francis knew this going in.

exactly....this is the exact kind of crap that he's taken heat for around the league since he came into the league. always unprofessional. i mean...just off the top of my head...we have the vancouver thing...we have the super bowl thing...we have him calling out the fans when his shooting % went over 40% for a day...we have this. one time...fine...we all make mistakes...but this guy, both on and off the court, makes the same mistakes over and over again. he never learns.

Rockets -- i literally heard what he said on Fox 26..that's how it was said. literally...word for word. and that's absolutely the impression that was communicated. that he talked to shaq and that if shaq was going there it would be fine...but otherwise he wasn't interested.

You're right he doesnt have the right to pick and choose what team he plays for when traded ... but he is well within his rights to say where he does and doesn't want to play. If he still gets traded there then I'm sure he'll play but he doesnt have to like it.

Yes he signed a contract with the Rockets and the Rockets signed him to a contract. If he had said he wants out of Houston then he would be an ass, but the Rockets are the ones in essence backing out of the contract by sending him somewhere else to play. What if you gave up everything to work for a company then after working for one year they said oh by the way we are sending you to Egypt for the next 7 years. Are you going to at least say something?

I'm all for the trade, but the bottom line is that Steve did nothing wrong. 95% of the players in this league would have done what he did if they had the time to do it before a trade was announced. This is why the GM's agree to a trade and THEN tell the players its done. Then the player has no time to try and influence the situation.

Steve's trying to make his situation better and I think most people here are hypocrits for saying that he is just being a baby.

No, the right to trade him is in the contract.

he does not have to like it, but by threatening something he has no right to do (play for Magic only of Shaq signs) to the media, that's -------> Selfish, unprofessional, immature.

He should be doing this 'behind the scenes.' No problem with that.

But he's telling the Orlando fans -- who'll be (possibly) paying him $76 million, that it's a big burden for him to be bothered playing for them. It's disappointing, that's all.

He should be being diplomatic outwardly, and getting his overpaid agents to work like hell to get him out of Orlando, if that's what he wants. Instead, he's an ass to Orlando. He's an ass to Houston. And the cry-baby label he worked so had to erase from his forehead, gets slapped back on.

Poor Francis, the talking Mule, strikes again.
