I don't know if anyone has mentioned James Lee Burke and his novels featuring ex-New Orleans cop Dave Robicheaux, but they are all excellent. Very atsmospheric, very good writing.
Josh, I also recommend "Confederacy of Dunces" for you. It's hilarious. Also check out "Post Office" by Charles Bukowski.
Have you checked out Carl Hiaasen? He does bizarre crime thrillers that center on the wierdos you find in southern Florida. Try 'Skin Tight' or 'Sick Puppy.' BTW, I've also read The Time Traveler's Wife and despite the rather pretentious punk rock references, I liked it. Right now, I'm reading Terrorist by John Updike. No opinion yet.
MCable- One of my favorite "heist" books is " A Present for Santa" by Arthur Hansl. I also like Randy Wayne White- "Sanibel Flats" was his first. The main character- Marion "Doc" Ford is a complex- interesting character with Secret weapon type skills. I also like Lawrence Block- any of the Mathew Scudder novels. Props to the earlier poster who mentioned the Dave Robicheaux novels- by Burke- really good.
I enjoyed the Myth-adventures of Aahz and Skeeve, a series of short fantasy/comedy novels by Robert Asprin. Each one is ~200 pages and reads very quickly. wiki page
Perhaps you'd enjoy "No Excuses" by Kyle Maynard. Kyle is very inspiring and his experiences as a congenital amputee make you re-evaluate one's perspective on life... GREAT book! BattiersBaby.
