I blame Bob Lanier for not blackmailing Bud for the Oilers' name and tradition in exchange for letting him out of the Astrodome lease early. Because if I remember correctly, the Oilers were let out of the their lease one year early. Maybe someone can clarify that.
Is there some rule against retiring a number? If McNair wants to retire #34, for example, and wants to have the name of a private citizen such as Earl Campbell's name up there with it, is there an actual rule preventing this?
Yes. It's called the #34 rule and it means I will take a bullet before it is worn in TN or TX or US or anywhere. Matter of fact, all you'd have to do to kill me is wear that number!
The point being, what's stopping McNair? I was griping about this in another thread, but he's said several times how he wanted a clean slate with the Texans, which to me was and is foolish. I wonder about those old Oilers out there wondering why they can't/won't/don't get any official recognition from Houston's NFL team. I feel badly for them and I also think it would behoove both McNair and the Texans to create and recognize that link from our football past, rather than trying to pretend that the Oilers never existed.
