It will be pretty interesting to watch the Timberpups and the Rocks this year. I wouldn't wager on a straight up who gets the most wins. Short season, brutal schedule full of back-to-backs... what will win out: pep talks or making use of your full roster in a very savvy way. As always, I am open to being massively surprised by McHale and am holding out hope.
These are the problems that people always had with Adelman. They had nothing to do with his actual coaching ability. He doesn't jump up and down and get all animated on the sidelines, so he must not be coaching. He doesn't call guys out in front of the media, so he must not be coaching. The complaints are probably coming from the same type of people who complain about Matt Schaub on Houston talk radio. He may act like he's not responsible, whatever that means, but he also doesn't try to take credit for all the success. It's always about the players, win or lose. Players actually appreciate that, believe it or not.
I like McHale's personality: Adelman had the charisma of a commode float. But as to x's and o's, I think the asst. coaches will have it covered. Adelman is clearly the superior coach as to record, but McHale will likely be better in the leadership role and handling the media.
Empathy and sympathy really do have identical definitions. (Sarcasm) You're talking about a guy from a place where they have REAL problems. Not whether or not your basketball team is going to win or not.
Adelman is recognized as generally the 2nd best coach in the NBA after Phil Jackson (well now Phil is retired I guess). I dunno why people say Adelman isn't a good leader. Players love him as long as they're not idiots. He's ridiculously successful with so many different teams and different types of teams. And he's had the succeeded without ever having a top 25 all time great (Clyde was close maybe).
I kind of like him already too. And it seems like he's going out of his way to be funny and likable to the media, which got me thinking that this could even been at least part of the reason he was hired. RA was a great coach while here, but let's face it ... not very media friendly.
He was hired to tank this season! His PR skills and media savvy are suited to this end, and will help sell the situation when it arises. We will not have a better winning percentage than last year barring a major trade. Adelman got the most out of the team the last 2 years.
So we can all agree that if we land Dwight Howard and we still make the 9th seed; that McHale is an inferior coaching talent? Good. Moving on.
I'm not sold on McHale yet. If he wins thats all that matters. I could care less if he is a plyers coach or he is hard on his players. I just want to win.
No matter what you think of his competence as a GM or a coach, McHale has never lacked charisma. He definitely knows how to say the right things and come across as a great guy. Whatever else his problems, relating to players should not be one of them. The coaching should sort itself out. Sampson is a great defensive mind. Finch from his days with the Vipers know his X's and O's. We have huge player database and scouting reports(remember how Battier got a dossier on Kobe?). He's really more of a manager than a coach. Don't get me wrong. He'll get all the accolade or the heat for team success or failure. But the actual work will be a team effort.
I would definitely wager on a straight up who gets the most wins. Easily. I'll put $100 on the Rockets to the tipjar if there are any takers.
Everything from the weird smiley face in the thread title to the parts in bold. Quite the creeper you are.
Should I trust you who probably never met him or Hakeem th Dream who worked out with him and actually knows about basketball and playing center in the NBA.
McHale reminds me of Kubiak, always preaching hard work and continue to progress. I take my chance on McHale doing great things than keeping Adelman, who I believe will be like Larry Brown, successful till the end. This will be an interesting season, I wasn't looking forward to it, but McHale and having a team with possibly a bonified center is exciting.
