VW/Audi has always had quality control problems.

Cool lookers & perfomers, but as far as quality... pffffttt!

Jag & Land Rover have improved VASTLY since being taken over by BMW & now Ford.

Benz is going to crap since the merger w/ Daimler.

Go Japanese - you can't lose.

Jaguar really had nowhere to go but up prior to the Ford takeover.

As for the Japanese, we have had some who've had problems with their Japanese cars. I know at least one person had several problems very early in his ownership of an '02 Altima (not me, though, my Altima works fine).

The whole problem with this ordeal is that I am closing on my house within the next 60 days, so I can't get another car loan until after that. Argh!!!!

You should have done some research *before* you bought the car. I always tell people never buy a car just by its look and feel. Reliability is THE most important thing in car buying. No matter how good the car performs, or how fomfotable it is, you won't enjoy it if it frequently breaks down.

Japanese cars used to be way ahead of the competition in terms of reliability. They still are, though the gap has shrunk in recent years.

Dude I don't even wanna read the posts in this thread... too damn depressing.

    2000 Jetta GLS 1.8 Turbo.

Love the car cuz its fast...
Hate the car cuz it is a piece of sh*t!

Your window problems are lightweight compared to mine. Driver's Side once, passenger 8 times in a row, then one more time on the drivers.

Engine started leaking oil to the left of the front right wheel. MAF sensor went out over and over again. Leak in the turbo charger, $3000 total to fix.

Get my oil changed at Jiffy Pop or whatever the hell, don't use a special oil filter. Do have a K&N air filter though helps with expensive a$$ gas mileage.

You're right the cup holders do suck. Have yours broken yet?

Also the rubberized coating on the interior rubs off. Your's doing that yet?

I f**king hate that car big time. I'll never buy another one again!!!

Ok, a couple of points to cover.

First...VW does ok in crash tests...FYI...Volvo nearly always are the best cars to get into crashes in.

Second, rockbox is correct....the problem has to be a recurring problem that the dealer is unable to fix for the lemon law to go into effect.

Third, electrical problems are not uncommon on VWs..
We used to get them in all the time with major electrical problems. Even our mechanic who specialized in electrical systems hated to see them come in. He said that his paycheck loved them but his state of mind hated them since they were so difficult to trace and repair problems.

and for the ones that are curious about O2 sensors(oxygen sensors)...they detect the amount of oxygen in your exhaust and regulate the amount of fuel and air that goes into your engine to keep the optimum mixture for the engine to burn.....its main reason to exist is to help keep the emissions down.
6 times out of 10 when your check engine light comes on, that will be the problem...they go out all the time.

bottome line...I dont care how good you think they look...only buy VWs if you have plenty of money for repair bills.

Sorry to hear it man. I have to get a brand new engine put into mine.

I hope everyone who reads this thread learns from our expensive mistakers. That is the only thing that makes me feel better.

Have you ever visited www.myvwlemon.com. It is a great in a masochistic sort of way.

It has to do with the emissions equipment and the fuel/air mixture that causes combustion. It gives the engine control unit the precise info on the delicate balance of the fuel/air mixture to prevent pollution and allow the engine to perform at max efficiency. Without it, the engine can burn either lean (too much oxygen) and cause damage to the engine or rich (too much fuel) and cause excess pollution. (the black smoke you see from these smokers). And on the VW issue, my wife wanted one, but after I told her what I had read about them, she relented and we bought a Volvo instead. Couldn't be happier with that car. Guess those socialist Swedes do something right after all. :D

I have a 99 Jetta as well, not top of the line, but GLS
the problem I had while my car hit over 50k

Battery goes out. which is normal to all the car, time to change to a new battery

Driver side window goes out. same problem for me too the window droped into the door.

    oxygen sensor goes out.

changed break once, changed all 4 tires once

the light on the AC goes out

the AM radio goes out, FM still good

other than that, it is realiable

by the way, the enginee is under warrenty for 10 yr, so u should have it repaired for free

I think it's kind of weird since my 1986 Porsche 928 is about the most bulletproof car I've ever owned and that includes my International Harvester truck. Even with the little problems that creep up on a car of its age, it still runs like a champ, the A/C blows cold, the windows roll up (I've never replaced the motors in them) and the interior looks a lot newer than it really is. Same parent company, totally different results. It's kind of like Buicks being really good cars and Chevys being really crappy cars.

Make sure you keep all your oil change records or they will not honor the warranty.
