Wow, I can't really think of any stereo types that I've been on the recieving end of. I'm latino, but I don't fit any of the stereotypes that go with that, particularly, I don't have any kind of accent. Also, my spanish isn't so great. My 2nd roommate in college however, when he found out I was latino, said to me right off the bat "I bet your mom makes real good mexican food." My mom's Nicaraguen. I should have asked him if his mom made good white people food, I didn't know where his ancestors came from. Still, that is a stereotype thing, when people ask if your mom makes a good type of food based on race, ie soul, chinese, vietnamese, etc. I read comic books still, lately, Jim Rome has been pissing me off with his cracks on the comic book movies. He says that they are for 10 year olds. I became a big fan of Brian Dawkins of the Philly Eagles today when I read in my ESPN mag that he is a huge wolverine fan. I dare Rome to make fun of Dawkins to his face about the comic book thing. He'll do more than turn a table over. Does Rome even have a desk on the set of Rome is Burning? Also, I didn't know Omega was gay, I just thought he was a big fan of the Matrix. I guess that's a stereotype I have or something I'm kidding of course. Now that I've got you cornered btw, since you are a tranformers fan, do you have season 2 on dvd? What's on it, I don't remember if they were more of the classic autobots or if that's when things start changing and going the way of the movie?
I'm from Texas... No, I don't have cows. No, there aren't oil wells in everyone's back yard. No, we don't all wear cowboy hats and boots every day. No, there are not tumbleweeds all over town. Houston is closer to a rainforest than a desert.
True that, I remember when I was in Australia, and I stopped to get a hair cut one day. This cute aussie stylist said she liked my accent and asked where I was from. As americans do, I said right off the bat that I was from Texas and didn't even mention anything about America or USA. Anyways, she asked if it was all a bunch of desert, oil wells, and cacti. I had to explain to her that Houston was a huge city as is Dallas.
I play D&D, so I get the crap about it being satanic all the time. It is FICTIONAL! There are FICTIONAL deities in a FICTIONAL world with FICTIONAL characters, and I can grasp that! I don't run around with a sword and a shield slashing people in the name of Hextor! Another one, I play Everquest, so I MUST know everything there is about computers. I know the ins and outs, but I do not have the abilities of a system admin!
I'm Hispanic and these are some of the stereotypes I don't like. 1. Everyone thinks I know how to speak spanish and some other hispanics get mad when they realize I don't. 2. I'm scared of immigration. Nope. I was born here in Houston in Hieghts Hospital, immigration can kiss my ass. 3. Some people think I like enchiladas and tacos, well they are right about that one.
I'm Chinese and NO: 1. I do not get straight A's nor am I great at math 2. I do not know kung fu or any type of matrial arts 3. My major in college has nothing to do with Medicine 4. I am not Japanese, Korean, or any other Asian ethnicity, nor do I speak those languages Yes: 1. I am a American 2. I am from the U.S., no really I am (You don't know how many times I get ask where I'm from along with "No, where are you REALLY from?" ) 3. I speak perfect english (No accent )
I hate when people ask me... Why do black people do this Why do black people like this Why do black people hate these Like all black people are clones of each other or something!
I hate Texas and Houston Stereotypes... as well as Southern Sterotypes but most of those have already been discussed in this thread. I'm gun owner and these are the stereotypes I get... I'm a "Gun Nut" - Sorry I like Guns of the Old West... I don't have a closet of 9mm's, Semi Auto's, or Assualt Rifles. I belong to the Texas Historical Shootist Society - we are active in preserving Texas History and promoting firearm awareness and gun safety. At our annual match over 250,000 live lead rounds are sent down range per year without a singe gun related injury in the 7 years I've been a member. I'm a NRA Nut - Yeah, I'm a member, 25 bucks a year. I also support NPR, PBS, and the arts in Houston (symphony & museums). Excuse me for supporting organizations that support things I enjoy. I'm endangering my wife and kids - I'm actually protecting them by educating them about firearms and fire arm safety as well as providing for our own protection and not relying on the police force that arrives after the crime has been committed 99% of the time. I'm careless with my firearms and endangering society - All but one of my guns are unloaded and locked in a safe. The one that is loaded is in a safe that can be opened only with with a code by me or my wife. The safe is bolted to the floor under the bed and can be accessed in seconds if ever needed. I want to kill someone - I've fired thousands of rounds, I always hit what I'm aiming for and haven't killed anything in years. I love killing animals - I rarely hunt... maybe once every 3 years. IF I hunt I always eat what I shoot. I never hunt just for sport. I'm a menace to society - I'm a law abiding citizen. I've passed a background check and I'm liscensed to carry a concealed firearm. I refuse to be a victim of a violent crime and no man woman or child will be a victim while in my pressence if I can help it.
Who asks? They just assume! I'd like to walk around and have everyone automatically think I'm King Dong. As Bill Maher says, most stereotypes exist because they're true. Not 100% of course, but more often than not you'll have a hard time finding a black guy without a sense of rhythm or a white guy who can stuff it with two hands.
Stereotypes for the most part are funny to me. I think it's funny that people think everyone in Houston owns cattle and wears boots. And the stereotype about girls talking all the time, liking pink, taking bubble baths, shopping a lot...all of those things ARE me. It's not a stereotype exactly, but I hate guys who talk to me just because they think I'm hot or good looking. I really don't agree that I am, but I've been told as much. Back to stereotypes... for the most part, they are good. If you ask sociologists, psychologists, as well as many historians, they are a good thing. It's a weeding out process. There is no way for everyone in the world to know everything about everyone and everything. You use stereotypes everyday to ignore information that you don't need. And stereotypes exist because they are based on some sort of truth. Vegetarians might be seens in those ways because it is what is considered to be against the "norm." It's a new/different way of thinking and living. Those ideas are ususally associated with liberalism, which has it's own stereotypes. And for Jeff to say that he won't have a heart attack because he's a vegetarian and that others will because they are not is a stereotype as well (in a way). Just joking around (a little)!
Gee... YoYao, then you should ask Buzz1023 whether he/she speaks Chinese... not me! Because I'm not an American Chinese... Maybe you should have your head checked, don't let the girls & all your romantic fantacies occupy most of your brain... By the way, I'm sure you are not an American Chinese
