Yes. The best sports rosters are those done by hardcore gamers found at communities like operationsports.com, the only way to transfer the file is via storage device. Ipods work. If you want the names for all the players on NCAA or classic teams in NBA2k you will want it.
May not need it in all cases, but if a 3rd party (in other words, not EA, 2K Sports, etc.) releases a roster update online, you may have to download it on your PC and then transfer the file to your PS3 via a storage device, like USB memory stick or something. Probably only a problem if the files are zipped, and you have to extract them with your PC (the PS3 can't do this AFAIK). Otherwise, you should be able to download them directly to your PS3 I think. edit: Never mind what I said, Ziggy pretty much explained it. WMP11 doesn't convert videos on-the-fly does it? I think that was why I never really messed with it. I had a bunch of Divx files, and at the time, the PS3 couldn't play them, so I needed a program that would convert and then stream them to the PS3. I think it was Tversity, which wasn't too bad IIRC. Not really a problem with the Divx update now, although I still have a few files that aren't playable on the PS3 directly. I switched over to Linux a couple of months ago though, and I haven't bothered to figure out what would be the best way to setup media streaming in Linux (Tversity might even work in Linux as well for all I know). There might be better options for Windows now. If you have a PSP, you can also stream media to your PSP via the PS3 media streaming. Kind of a neat feature, especially since you can connect it through wireless hotspots IIRC. I haven't really messed with it too much though.
