several leaked sources tell us that top gun 2 will tackle the issue of navy pilots facing possible extinction due to the fourth industrial revolution as their jobs are being taken over by drones and robots.
Dogfights might not be as prevalent now (were they ever in the last 50 years?) but I'm sure we still have very skilled pilots trained these days should we need them.
Also Tom cruise does pilot himself in some of the scenes. Hes a certified pilot. But not any of the Jets lol. Also dude got his helicopter licence so he could fly the helicopters in mi3. He's a wierd Scientology dude, but damn if he isn't great at being a movie star.
he should make a biopic of his life while he's still alive because no one can play tom cruise besides tom cruise.
I'm not plugged into the Air Force or Navy, but they are likely in a pilot shortage. And I would think it's because there are limited or no tactical missions just like the trailer points out. So they all end up doing office work inside the military for low pay and forced assignments. And that spells see ya. The question will become, is that what the next generation wants out of that experience. We know the old pilots don't. But what do the new pilots want. Pilots probably started leaving in the 80's and it's just continued to scale with increased automation and a lack of focus on missions. Even if you focus on missions the pilot isn't really flying anymore anyway. And my guess is that the contradiction in all of that is that the Air Force has reduced the number of squadrons at the same time, not for lack of pilots, but for lack of tactical work. Would I make a movie about it? I see that story line as plausible. the last pilot type of thing. But I don't see how they are going to squeeze some glory out of it.
Nothing against Val Kilmer, he looked great in the trailer, but they backed off him in that trailer farther than Marla Hooch in a League of your own. "What a hitter."
Yes, dogfights were "in the last 50 years" (wtf, really?) It's all about improved radar and "fire and forget" missiles. Our planes never see the other guys other than on a screen. Their planes never see ours.
I missed Mav taking off in the SR-72 at the end of the 2nd trailer -- I was hoping they would mix in some cooler planes from the Air Force (F-22/ F-15/ F-35). I figured they would have featured F-35s since there is a Navy version and it's a lot cooler than F-18s. They are going to include an F-14 somehow but it might be a flashback scene. Some dogfights wiih Su-35s would be great as well. Su-35 thrust vectoring madness.
They are using CGI for the Tomcat, but since this is basically an ad for the military I'm sure they'll at least make a cameo whether real or digital.
lol I just realized that I cannot name any Kenny Loggin's song off the top of my head that wasn't from a soundtrack. Danger Zone - Top Gun Footloose - Footloose I'm Alright - Caddyshack
