How old are you?? Your metabolism is bailing you out right now, but one day, that one fast food meal plus dinners out every night will catch up to you. Even if you don't appear fat from the outside, your cholesterol and sodium levels will be affected.

To Major, if you're happy, and your weight isn't affecting your lifestyle, then that's your decision. However, I'm sure you know the risks associated with being obese. It's a conscientious decision that you're making however, and that's all that matters.

How do you know he is lazy? America is not really lazy for a first world country. Americans work more and harder than much of Europe.

Not a bad person, but a lazy person?

There's different kinds of lazy. Americans can sit in a office for 60 hours a week but needs to drive 2 blocks to the McDonald's. Not saying the OP is lazy, but it's likely, Europeans walk more than we do.

    You base this on what?

And by lazy I mean sitting in a drive through window at a McDonalds that's 15 cars long rather than going inside where there's only 1 person in line.
Or rather than going to the grocery store and getting fresh produce and cooking a healthy meal, eating that said McDonalds so you have more time to watch Law and Order.
Or rather than taking the 3 flights of stairs to your car in the parking garage, you take the elevator.
Or instead of going on a walk/jog in the evening when you get home, you crack open a beer or two.

Staying healthy isn't hard, nor is it rocket science. It's absolute, 100% lazyness and lack of self control. Hell, you don't even really have to exercise, just walk a little bit and eat right. Eat a god dam salad instead of 3 cheese enchiladias for dinner. Eat fish and veggies rather than meatloaf from boston market.

Other than someone who has a real disease, there's no excuse for being obese.

Second this. It doesn't make you a bad person (what do you mean by that) but it sounds like you are the one having an issue about it. No pain, no gain!

I like this post. It's ok to enjoy yourself once in a while but don't delude yourself. If you're a fatty, you're a fatty. You will have health problems that relate to your weight. You will have totally unrelated health problems that will be exacerbated by your weight. It's like smoking. Doesn't give you cancer now but don't be blind to what it's doing to your body just because you're ok now.

This. It really is about taking small steps and changing habits.

Stop taking the elevator, go buy a bike and ride it to work instead. Go for a walk, stop eating fast food (I can cause Im not obese), eat more vegetables, work out (fastest way to burn fat is to build muscle)

I wasn't aware I required an excuse. It is possible for me to lose weight....but I am constantly thinking about food and exercise, I don't get the things I need to get done as well as I am accustomed to doing them because I am exhausted and starving.

I am in a Masters program is everyone who is not reading 3 or 4 hard core literature books a month cranking out 18 page papers and improving their mind instead of working out to improve their body lazy? Or might it be they have a different set of priorities.

In answer to those who say for someone who doesn't want to lose weight I obsess about it a lot. Take the Major Malcontent challenge. Read a random 3 threads in the Hangout......any ones that reach a few pages will have some random comment about fat. Regardless of subject matter. If it is Game of Thrones someone will comment they are worried that Martin won't live to finish the series because he is fat...etc...etc...

It's easy to judge, but between nature and nurture, some people have a much more difficult time adopting a healthy lifestyle than you would think.

Overcoming a crappy upbringing, unhealthy living environment, or bad genealogy are far from "not hard".

People do things that are "hard" by your definition many times. Get degrees, start a family, progress in a career. Sometimes you have to nut up and get it done.

Hard to comment on such an issue without knowing you personally, OP. Your size doesn't make you a bad person, of course, but if being that size is making you depressed, you might want to change something.

However, when it comes to losing weight, it's more about a lifestyle change than a particular diet plan. Personally, I've known more than a few people who have gone to the "primal lifestyle" and as a result lost a lot of weight and are much happier.

    Basically, it's:
    1) Eat lots of animals, insects, and plants
    2) Move around a lot
    3) Get lots of sleep
    4) Play (like you used to as a kid: basketball, ultimate frisbee, football, hiking, whatev)
    5) Get some sun

First step should be, as others have said above, eliminating sugars and carbs where possible. Entirely. Then make sure you get plenty of sleep. After those two steps, you should have plenty of energy to carry out the rest of the steps rather simply.

No s**t, but that doesn't make it "not hard".

Big MAK's comments are very off-base and ignorant.

He strikes me as a person who has never dealt with serious weight issues, nor been close to anyone who has.

I think if your that busy first thing first is to start eating healthy if u cant find time to work out. Eat apples, oranges, grapes instead of chips, candy, etc. also drink lots of water i know its tough but u seem like a guy that wants to get the job done. Just take baby steps and eventually u will get there.

Been there, but I also found time to run 30-45 minutes 4x a week at least.

People make too many excuses as to why they cant exercise. I have friends who are doctors and work 18 hours a day, 6 days a week and still find time to exercise. You're no different than anyone else.
