PF and backup C obviously is our weak point, but the reason why we recruited so many guards is,the backcourt problem is bigger

juwan howard and chuck hayes are both garbage..... this team is so frustrating.

seriously - we need a defensive / rebounding presence at 4. i dont even think howard can dunk and he's at least 6'10. the only badass 4 named chuck is a hall of famer this year.

I'm not big on Chuck Hayes. Please don't allow a 6'6" PF to do much damage other than grab 4-5 boards in 5 min during garbage time. Evans has a big wide body and is exceptional at boxing out. Hayes has some good hustle, but he cleary doesn't go after balls like Evans. ;)

Our guards are nothing to be hyped about, but I guess we're going with a backcourt by committee approach. Still I would rather cut 2 or 3 of them, and add a big man.

if tracy and yao are healthy and Battier plays well..like we expect..and we can knock down a few threes, we don't need a big time PF....if one or more go down, then yes we do..

JVG on Evans -- "I am so sick of watching that guy flop I can't stand it. It is an absolute disgrace what he does. Those two fouls he supposedly drew on Yao (Ming) the other night were a joke — jumping into the front row. The NBA's got to do something about it."

He goes on later in the tirade to say how talented Evans is, but someting tells me he would never coach him.

co-sign this post. cato would be a great addition to this team for the minimum. he would be a great starting power forward, and he can get extra minutes backing up yao at center. he would be a nice addition to the team, if he just concentrated on rebounding and blocks instead of offense. i say the rockets should re-sign cato even though he had horrendous years when the Rockets gave him a max deal.

The problem with not having a strong PF is the fact that Duncan, Garnett, and others will continue to give us fits. Battier and Hayes are too short and Sunglasses is to slow.

Duncan and Garnett give everybody fits. If we're looking for a PF to stop them, we're wasting time.

We need a PF that takes the double team out of Yao's lap in the paint so Yao can operate and when he pitches it out to the PF, it's 3 points instead of a possible 2. The way to work Duncan and Garnett over is to make them have to perform a task defensively that is impossible. Duncan CANNOT guard Yao in the paint and help on the 3 point shooter. Duncan cannot guard the 3 point shooter and still help with Yao.

You are looking at this backwards: Best defense is a good offense.

We'll never beat Duncan and Garnett if we spend all our energy trying to match up with them. The goal is to make them match up with us.

How do we do that? Maximize Yao and Tracy's effectiveness.

How do we do that? Ensure Yao and Tracy are in 1-on-1 sets as much as possible.

How do we do that? Surround them with guys that can hit wide open shots to minimize double and triple teams.

Getting a defensive minded PF accomplishes JUST THE OPPOSITE. That means whoever is guarding the PF is free to double team. You need a PF that can hit open shots and space the floor. Love him or hate him but Juwan ONLY asset is just that.

Exacty. We'll do fine with Hayes rebounding against 50% of the teams in the league. Hayes height will be overcome against a lot of opponents. It is the playoffs where Duncan and Nowitski are going to burn us in a 7 game chess match. Juwan and double teams will have to be used against those guys because Hayes will only be good for short bursts until they start posting him.

We might get away with double teams against San Antonio because of Bowen, but against Dallas will be harder when you have great offensive depth and guys like Stackhouse coming off the bench. It would be nice to have a PF who could play respectable D on a tall PF and not require help. That way JVG could pick his times to add pressure.

The need for a PF/C to defend against tall 4s has already been addressed. The name of the solution is Matt Haryasz.

Nobody is comfortable in the paint with a big Haryasz in his face.
