Frigging stars, how the hell did people use those things to find out where they were going... Dang near impossible for me to tell the difference between two stars. I guess its like me trying to tell the difference between 2 of the same type of farm animals...
You don't really need to be able to tell the difference to figure out what direction you're going. Stars rise in the east and circle the sky to the west. So, all you need to do is pick a star and watch it for a few minutes. When you notice what direction it's moving, you will have your North, South, East and West. Now if the star you're watching doesn't ever move, you once again found your directions because that is the North Star.
