http://www.delafont.com/music_acts/Etta-James.htm She is a woman that can do with her voice, what Avril Lavigne tries do do with her looks...
OK, I've actually spent a lot of time b****ing about Avril (yes, I am sad and lame), and here's why: she's the most obvious marketing ploy, like, *ever*. They're doing it like this: a big proportion of MTV's audience is a lot of pimply, sensitive little Sk8ter Bois, right? Plus a whole lot of little teenybopper girls. Now, all of the skater boys find her appealing because she's, like, cool and will hang out with them at the mall and she skates, but she's also girl-next-door vulnerable and hot! So she's like their best friend with boobs, they've been dying to meet someone like her ever since their little hormones first started pumping. Plus all the little teenybopper girls like her because her look is easily achievable (****, *I* could look like her with a bit of eyeliner) and they think she's 'real' *and* possibly if they act like her all the skater boys will hang out with them and they'll have boyfriends! Voila, everyone buys her album, yay for MTV! Thus, I conclude that she is doing a lot for opposite-sex teen relationships, but not a lot for music.
You guys think this girl isn't fake? COME ON!! HER whole image is manufactured and created by the record company to take advantage of this whole skater/grunge fashion revival. She doesn't write any of her own songs. She can't even play guitar. Now this doesn't sound very DIY punk rock does it? Have you listened to her lyrics? You call this an artist? God help us...
As opposed to weezer (who is in you handle)? Oh yeah...I forgot about the classic artistry that is "Buddy Holly" and "The Sweater Song." Gimme a break.
yea it's called being creative... being a little quirky and oh wait?....ACTUALLY writing your own songs, oh no not that...... and no, you don't get a break.
Ooooh, zingers from 1994. Weezer are *endlessly* better than Avril. I'm going beyond 'it's a matter of personal taste' here to say that it's an objective fact. So there.
Funny, I don't consider most of those to be punk...except for the Clash's first album. They all have punk elements to some degree, though.
Okay, I'll bite rimmy: who do you consider punk and what genre do the Buzzcocks and the Damned fit into if you don't think that they are punk? (I used old Offspring for "effect"). Freak, I hope you weren't insinuating that I only like bands or artists that are considered favorites of the critics. I do like the Goo Goo Dolls and the Bee Gees just to name a few. Besides, you should know by now - critics (and me) are not too high on today's pop music.
I like her, and I like her songs. I know she is a manufactured star. I hate how she is a manufactured star. She's the exact same thing as Britney Spears, and her others, but just a different genre. Oh well.
I think that Avril is way hotter then Michelle Branch. I agree that Avril is probably a manufactured star, but she still looked pretty good before she was a star.
