It's like watching VSpan trying to run an offense.... agony.

    Ok, kidding.

I had never had any major surgery until I had my surgery 3.5 years ago for a herniated disc in my back. I remember the doctor saying, you can always pull out of having the surgery while I was on the bed getting ready to get wheeled off. He said a lot of people have done it at that point and there's nothing wrong with it. I said, "na, let's roll". The anesthesiologist came by and said, "ok, I'm going to inject you with something that may start making you sleepy". That was the last I remember - I was out cold. I don't know if I lasted more than a few seconds after he injected me or what, but it was fast. lol.

Shouldn't be a problem at all.

Anybody know what chemicals they use to put you under like that? I have heard it is a 3 part injection, one part to make the pain go away, one to make you sleep, and one to keep you asleep although that may be incorrect.

I've been under twice. Both times, I felt like I was asleep for about 2 minutes when it was more like a couple of hours.

When it first hits you, it's the greatest feeling in the world. I actually kind of liked it.

Good luck DD, I'm sure everything will be fine.

They can use all sorts of different drugs. There's not just one or even three specific drugs.

That's where the art of anesthesiology comes in.

I've never had any surgery-just repairs in the ER. No problem-did not feel a thing.
    All will be fine.
    Please advise how you are.

    Good luck.

hah, I had a nice little lip surgery fix up in the ER after doing a face plant once.
Had to wait for about 5 hours behind 4 year olds who said their "ear didnt feel good" and crap like that while I was pouring out blood. my upper lip was like 3 times bigger, they inject the Novocaine straight into the wound, worst pain in my life, then when they start stitching I can feel the needle pass through the numb points then into the un-numbed part the jackasses didn't do.
Worst pain ever, plus it was on 9/11 a year later, I had to see on CNN all that and Johnny Unitas died on that day wtf! F you Woodlands Memorial. K I'm done ranting, good luck with your surgery.

What a bunch of sorry girls. (i was thinking about using a different word. synonym for cat)

When I have surgery, I like to do sodoku puzzles as they work on me. Sometimes, I do the New York Times Crossword puzzle. IN INK.

Yeah I had stitches on my forehead in 5th grade. ****ing jackasses didn't put enough anesthesia so parts so when the needles hit that point, good god it was the worst pain I've ever felt. And then I'm practically yelling at the doctors and those douchebags are like, "oh he's a little kid who's scared."

**** you you pieces of ****, you jackasses can't do a local anesthesia properly, and i have a small pointy metal object navigating through my forehead.

Moral of the story - just opt for a full anesthesia. The moment when right before you pass out has to be one of the coolest feelings I've ever had. Might be the only positive of having multiple knee surgeries.

Thanks for all the input, it is exactly what I wanted to hear. I am getting an IV, and the surgery should last only about 30 minutes....

I hope to go home in the early evening, and probably straight to bed.

I went in to the Doctors office today hoping for an out patient procedure, and he recommended we fix the known problem and the suspected problem at the same time so the known problem doesn't keep coming back.

As it has for the 2nd time in the last 2 years.

    DD

PS. It is not my foot, that is going well, 4 shots in and the foot feels much better.

All the times I was put under, when I woke up, my anus was in a lot of pain. I asked my doctor about this and he said it was quite common for my procedure.

On the other hand, I'm still not sure if I needed to be put under for an ingrown toenail, it was kind of odd, but who am I to question my doctor who has been doing this for years? And the doc did the procedure five times for the same toe, which was odd, but my toe doesn't hurt anymore, so I guess it worked.

I had an appendectomy in 1990. My Dad gave me something called Versed (pronounced like "Ver-Said") when I was in the ER. By the time they were wheeling me down to the OR, I was apparently awake but completely out of it (according to my then-wife, I was going on and on about how much I liked Nancy Reagan and how I thought she got a bad rap from the press). I had (and continue to have) no memory of leaving the ER. It's a total blank for the time between a few minutes after getting the Versed and later on when I was waking up in recovery.

I recommend the Versed if given the option.

I've been put under several times, and let me tell you it is the greatest feeling in the world! Those few seconds before you pass out will be the most relaxed you've ever felt. The bad thing with me is though, once I start waking up I just start talking all kinds of nonense. Apparently last time as I was waking up I started telling the nurses all about my recent divorce, and even invited them all over for a BBQ at my place. :D

I really disagree about it being the "greatest feeling in the world" most of the time I've been under it hasn't been a very good experience. I think a lot of this depends on how long you are under, your body size and your metabolism. For most of the surgeries I've had resulted from a serious motocycle accident where the my femur underneath the hip joint had to be pinned together and reconstructed, twice so in those cases I think I was under for hours each time. Also when I was having my surgeries I was in my late teens with a high metabolism and low body weight so the drugs might've affected me more than someone who is bigger.

In regard to what drugs they give you they give you a whole cocktail. I remember during a few of my surgeries the anasthesiologists laying out a whole bunch of syringes on my chest, on not in, and injecting them into the IV. After about the third or fourth one I remember going out.
