Because I don't think its the injuries that has kept him from implementing his system. Its because Yao in the high post DOES NOT WORK. Its because T-mac and Artest aren't going to magically be open back-door, or running off screens. Its because they don't have a top 5 PG running this offense (which is really what it takes). I remember how much talk there was when we first got Adelman about how Yao in the high post will be better for everybody... it will put less strain on him banging in the low post, and we'll get to showcase his passing skills. What we didn't know was that Yao (while a good passer) needs to take his time and be methodical... things that aren't conducive to the quick-decision-making high post offense. Also, we now realize that Yao is playing more minutes than ever... and he's no longer as effecient, and he's already had one stress-related season-ending injury under Adelman's increased minutes. If I had known that 2 years after they got rid of JVG, they'd be running an even more simplified version of the offense (not as much pick and roll... less movement after the initial post-up pass)... along with playing less defense, I'd consider it a bad trade-off.
It's all well and fine to be done with Adelman. The question is whether you know you have someone better available to replace him. Otherwise, being done with Adelman is rather pointless.
He did the same shyt in one other game that i don't remember...as a result the other team keep attacking and score with ease because Yao it not in there. When the team score enough inside, this clueless coach then start putting Yao in ...BUT it was too late, the damage has been done and as a result the Rockets lost that game. This coach never learned...and tonight he did the same shyt and almost cost the Rockets the game never mind going OT because it should not have gone OT.
I already mentioned Tom T. But honestly, it could be anybody who's ever worked with an elite center, along with being able to stress defense. Hell, I'd even consider Mario Elie (years of working with Dream/Duncan, along with a tough-nosed attitude, and now some quality assistant coaching years). I just don't think we need to pay for a guy like Adelman... who was brought to turn us into Phoenix or GS-lite. Hell, he would probably be having more fun if he could re-make the team to fit his system (which he can't do, mainly because of Yao).
Coach has done an exceptional job on the fronting Yao problem. The double screens (One on top, one on bottom) is one of the reason why we can actually give Yao the ball. We're complaining that Yao got it all the time..., but before Rick came we didn't even know how to give him the ball. Rick has his ups and down. My main problem with him is how he is controlling Tracy. He's a 22 million dollar star, but you have to coach. I'm tired of the stagnant offense and the non motion offense. I see some of the offense. The Luis Scola And 1 at the end was motion offense. There is no reason to be done with Rick. Give him time. Morey said in a interview that Rick sometimes let players play so they can learn. This will be a great learning experience for Yao, and how he choked at the end. At the same time, it's a great learning experience for all the players.
Ok two things... There have been mentions of JVG. Now I'm not saying he wasn't a good coach; I do sometimes wonder what this team could have done had he stayed another year. Would they have pushed past the first round? Well if Yao had still gone down, probably not. But then at the same time, they wouldn't have lost the first quarter of the season trying to learn a new offense, so they could have been a higher seed and avoided the Jazz altogether. Then again, would they have still had the 22 game win streak? If not, they very well could have ended up with the same record. But, at least Adelman has recognized that he might not have the right players to fully implement his system, so he's created a mix-match of offenses of sorts. He hasn't tried to force his system down the team's throat and gotten rid of players that don't buy into it, opting for past their prime, has-beens. Also, I don't think it can be stressed enough how frustratingly difficult it is for Adelman to coach this team when he doesn't know which of his key players could be inactive on any given night. Still, he's coached the team to a 20-11 record and second place in the division despite the never ending cascade of injuries. That said, what i don't like is how this is the same team (with one major addition) from last year; a team that won 22 games in a row, and finally started to click and gel at the end of the season. Why haven't we seen that same team yet?
I hardly post in the GARM thread any more, let alone start threads... but this is something that becomes more and more clear each and every game... mainly because the team goes more and more away from the Adelman offense. Last year, they struggled early as Rick tried to implement a new system. Alas, he changes it back to the old one, and they start winning. This year, similiar things are happening... along with him relying too much on the players to 'figure it out' sometimes, and a further regression on defense.
I have no problem with Rick Adelman's offense or his coaching on the court in general. So it's not about his coaching that i criticize...it's his substitution and his decision of taking Yao out and let other teams attack the basket and score with ease is the ONLY problem I have with this coach and i can't understand why because we have already lost a game because of this bogus decision and tonight he did the same shyt and almost cost us the game when we were up by 3.
Tracy was playing at a still elite level (41 points in game 6), and this team is actually built more around his dribble-penetration/play-making than it is around Yao in the low-post. Also, the defense was more tenacious last year... this year, its clear that Yao, Tracy, and Battier have all lost a step. T-mac and Battier may improve as the season goes on... but Yao's feet may be shot forever. Finally, this team hasn't played with a sense of urgency all year. Instead, they look more scared that they're going to get hurt if they play with a sense of urgency.
man you made me laugh real hard there. i feel for you. the op has some valid points though. when i first heard one big reason les had hired adelman was for a faster paced and higher scoring team, i was like, wtf?
Actually... I liked that move he did. We were up 3, and he put in Barry to protect the perimeter. I'd let them have the layup/dunks and then they'll give us 2 free throws. Problem was... Rafer choked. And that was one of the problem I had with Rick... not putting in Brooks. I agree with the urgency problem. I don't see the same fire they had during the 22 game winning streak. I partly blame this on all the injuries. This team hasn't been together; the players still don't know their identity. I also blame this on McGrady. Makes you wonder... everytime his knee ends up being an excuse (whether true or untrue) how much more game time we are wasting that could help us know what our identity is. Or at least help us get some chemistry going.
i'm a huge van gundy fan who wishes we would have kept him, but at the same time you gotta give rick a chance with this team healthy. he did a heck of a job last season with all the injuries and really he's doing about as well as you can expect this season with what we know. I don't think we can run exactly what he wants us to run with this group of guys, but the man isn't an idiot, he can develop and implement new strategies. it's hard when your best players aren't always available.
Nope i don't by that decision...because you're only up by 3 and giving up an easy 2 with plenty of time left is unacceptable. Beside, if you let them shoot three and it's possible contested 3, who's to say that they're going to make it?? If they don't, then it's pretty much game over. You give up an easy 2 pts and you're only up by 1 and depending on FREE throw possibly up by 2pts only with plenty of time left. If you have Yao inside, you would not give up 2 easy pts....period! So not only they give up 2 pts by taking Yao out...the Jazz scored another 2 easy pts right after that...without Yao presence. Totally unacceptable!! These 2 plays are the reason we're heading OT. Rick Adelman don't know what the hell he's doing...he cost us a game by doing the same shyt in the other game by taking Yao out...so don't tell me this shyt is working. In that game, Yao was pissed off that he took him out because he expressed his frustration during the interview right after.
I think that case here is that Adelman tried to put his offense through the Rockets in the beginning of the last year and got what...poor record and got bashed. Then as every other good scout he adjusted the offense to the players rather than adjusting players to the offense because Yao Ming who is 7.6 can't run that fast as he's supposed to be and when he does he gets tired instantly. Princeton offense isn't hard but it isn't for no reason called high motion offense and it's all based on speed and quickness. So I don't give up on Adelman, he can't make quick players and adjust them to the Princeton offense out of high centers, good defenders and undersized power forwards.
Yes... He was competent enough to recognize what any of us could see was painfully obvious. He even tried it again this year, thinking that it merely took more time to "get it". I don't give h much credit for that. Hell, we wasted good chunks of training camp and the beggining of the season both years. So if he can't put in his style of play, why did we hire him? It's looking more and more like a lateral move except we are worse defensively, and I question whether he has the stamina to instill that desperate sense of urgency that this fairly non-athletic team needs to succeed.
If you watched a game between the Rockets and the Suns during one of JVG's time here... we were up by 3. And we just let them score a 3 pointer and they took a very needed game from us in overtime. On post game interview... Jeff said he had to foul there instead of giving them 3 points. Free throws are suppose to be free. They are the most wanted ways of scoring. Rafer just choked at the end.
Hate to say I told ya so...well...not you...but...anyway. Not only is he not effective, it marginalizes his strengths. If it were up to me, we'd still have JVG. RA's the guy now. They're winning games. If they get healthy for playoff time, they have as good a chance as anyone in the west.
