Shouldn't the question really be: "What would JVG's wife tell him to do?"

A lot pf people apparently hate facts bumping into their reality.

Hint: repeated often on bbs <> reality

    Neither
Van Gundy would have packaged the Cassell pick along with an underachieving Horry for Sean Elliott.

SAM I AM might have induced a coronary or a stroke in JVG.

On one hand, Cassell is the antithesis of a JVG PG. Sam's shoot first, shoot second and then look for the open guy attitude would have landed him in Jeff's doghouse right out of training camp.

On the other hand, Sam's ability to knock down shots from all over the court and still wind up with 5-8 assists while scoring 20+ pts would have made it nearly impossible to keep him off the court.

So.... if, and it's a BIG IF... Sam had survived a JVG training camp (as a rookie) without getting traded or suspended, then maybe he would have eventually forced his way into the rotation.

For those who argue against giving Kill Bill or Novak (or JL-III) more minutes in the heat of a run for homecourt advantage, I actually agree and I understand that perspective. If playing them could cost us a single game, then it's NOT a good idea.

Still, there are times when it wouldn't cost us anything, and VG still rarely lets these guys get a sniff of playing time.

I absolutely believe that VSPAN and NOVAK could / probably would get more PT on another competitive team with a coach who's more willing to develop young talent.

For example, VSPAN might make a better fit at Golden State, Toronto, and Phoenix... and NOVAK might be better suited in places like Miami, Orlando, Lakers, or maybe Detroit...

I absolutely believe that JVG's idea of who should get minutes, when and why is FAR too rigid.

And for him to expect rookies to NOT make mistakes is naive and foolish.

I think a part of the problem with Kill Bill's performance (and probably that of Novak's as well) is an expectation they have that any little screw-up will cost them minutes and a chance to prove their worth.

It's like a relief pitcher who gets lit up when he goes out there and then is reduced to LONG relief, or a punt returner who fumbles one time and then sits on the bench for the rest of the season.

Bill has shown flashes and please remember that most of his PT came with other bench players, NOT WITH THE STARTERS!!

Also, the ROX persuaded VSPAN to come over from Greece, it's not like he was a walk-on free agent. This guy has already shown what he could do against some of the best players in the world and succeeding. What VSPAN didnt' have in Europe was some little Napolean-complex making everybody fit into his narrow idea of what/how basketball should be played.

And NOVAK, I think is similar to Boki in terms of skill and development. The more time NOVAK gets, the better he'll become at knocking down the open shot (Boki didn't find his "groove" until he got to a third team).

So, on the one hand, I agree that neither should be played if the consequences are too dire, but so should JVG defenders agree that Jeff seeks reasons to NOT PLAY these guys rather than the other way around!!!

Just like he looked for excuses not to play Head right?

He doesn't have to look for reasons not to play them - he already has one: neither of them is very good right now.

You know that Sam was #2 in the league in assists in one season right?

Sam is a 'make the right play first' PG

    1999-2000:
Appeared in 81 games - all as a starter- and was the team leader in assists (9.0 apg, 2nd in NBA), second in steals (1.26 spg) and third in scoring (18.6 ppg), free throw percentage (.876, 9th in NBA) and minutes (35.8 mpg)

this whole thread is a bunch of "ifs" and "buts"

the facts are the facts and the JVG haters conveniently spin their excuses to fit their illogical arguments, and then do the same thing with irrational excuses and reasons why Luther played more minutes in his rookie season...

yes he would have played.regardless of what people say jvg is a good coach who knows more about basketball than any of us.if sam showed he can play in preseason or during games or even in practice he would play.i'm sure jvg would have played sam because sam even though he likes to shoot,he is someone who make good decisions with the ball and take care of the ball.

Look at Span from Nov 20th to Dec 12th, then look at Lucas from that point on. Both players had an oppurtunitty but didnt' seize them. Billy is just a piss poor shooter at this point and nothing else jumps out at you even when he does play. Then look at all those goose eggs under Lucas's assist column even when he did get playing time, not what we need from a point guard.

    http://www.databasebasketball.com/players/playerlog.htm?yr=1993&ilkid=CASSESA01

Now look at Cassells, he wasn't given consistent playing time his rookie season, but more often than not, when he's on the court, he makes an impact. His off shooting nights he still gets a couple of assist, other wise he hits his shots. You'll also notice he has a couple games with decent rebounding numbers in low minutes, that's what you do when you're a low first round pick trying to make it, you do anything possible to help the team. He earned his playing time through the season by :gasp: playing well.

I think it's trendy to say JVG wont play young players, the truth of the matter is he has played the young players, but they didn't prove themself when given the chance.

Agreed and here's a quote to emphasize that JVG has nothing against young players.

Head came into the game shooting 44 percent from 3-point range in the fourth quarter and during a late timeout, Houston coach Jeff Van Gundy told Head to be ready in case McGrady got into trouble.

"Whenever your coach has confidence in you, it just puts confidence in yourself," Head said. "That's why I love playing for the guy. When he trusts you, he usually shows that he trusts you."

I'm sure this was the case last year as well when Head took the last shot multiple times.

    kenny was pretty bad sometimes..

I think that JVG would have been forced to put in cassell due to kennys ineffectiveness.

I think in the end he may not have played as much I still think he would have played much more than novak or v span.

kenny also was a complete defensive liability

    1. He is not a rookie this year (unless I missed something)
    2. We did have some "minor" injuries this year (32 games yao, 10 games tmac)

I'm amused that so many people think JVG would have played Cassell.

    Think about it..........

In the first place JVG would thrown a fit if they even drafted Cassell, then he would have made a point to not play him, or to play him out of position, etc.

But does anyone REALLY think JVG would let management draft the type of PG that Cassell was early on?

thats why you learnw to use the ignore button. i think my IQ went down by 50 just by reading their posts.

Vspan was given his chance earlier in the season. So did john lucas. Head played more in part of injuries, but he was going to play anyway because he could shoot the ball. LOOK AT THE DAMN LOGS. I know it's hard for some of you to read a log, but please try before you open your mouth.
