You have to take into account that in the fourth quarter, the Rockets were trying to keep the clock running while giving up a reasonable number of points. Hayes looked like he was playing Gasol soft because he wanted to avoid fouls more than anything else

We'll just have to see how Gasol does tonight.

That may be true, I guess we'll find out tonight, it just seemed like it made sense for him to play that way though. Hayes has such a strong lower body, it's hard for big men to back him down, that's why Gasol struggled, but once he faced him up (after getting a good position) and just went straight up on him it looked like Hayes was having difficulties. I hope I'm wrong.

And I think you were watching it way too closely at the wrong time. JVG also stated that most of those points were meaningless...

Why? Because when you have a 29 point lead, you avoid fouls, let Pau do what he wants. It's very hard to make up that kind of deficit scoring 2's and not 3's.
