    Yup.

Why, you ask? That's easy. Because the administration the country voted in are corrupt and inept, and much like how they are cutting out science and health sources, the only information and data they want available is the misinformation they thrive on (and create/provide).

Much harder to convince people of stuff like, say, vaccine conspiracy bullshit when there's so much research showing it's bullshit. So you have to cut out and make people doubt all that research as much as possible.

Luckily for them (and unluckily for everyone else and the health of people in general), social media and right wing propaganda have already been on the job for a while now.

This one isn't on this administration per se. These satellites were being decommissioned and it was known that they would be going down. It doesn't sound like there were any replacements, so if anything, that's the failure here - there should have been replacements planned a decade ago.

sure, but they are still functional. cutting with no replacements is nonsensical. as usual, the small kernels of fact are used as cover for general ineptitude, or worse

No, they aren't really functional, or I should say, safely functional. They were supposed to reach end of life a decade ago, but were extended (amazingly for this long). The problem is if you keep these up there, at some point, they may fail which could lead to malfunction and uncontrolled descent. Earth's orbit is becoming congested, so the US has decided to properly decommission them and not leave them to chance.

and when does the decommission and removal take place? 'Aren't really functional' is a misdirection if they can still provide the necessary information *and* there is no viable replacement in place. Unless this descent is happening in conjunction, it's more an excuse than a plan.

Combined with the proposed NOAA cuts, trying to provide that rationality to the situation seems shaky at best. I can sort of understand the desire to give the benefit of the doubt in situations that seem illogical otherwise, but I don't know how many times people have to get burned before they learn there really is a fire.

Well, we just made the world a hotter place--and with it, accelerated every bad thing that is related to climate instability.

If you haven't already, it's time to start family/generational planning because we are on our own. Good luck to you all.

I don't think you fully understood what I said. They are functional, but they're at risk of failing and causing major issues. The DoD has a different reason (cybersecurity). You can read more about it in these links:

BTW, they’re pushing it out by one month. Sometimes, problems aren’t caused by intentional harm, but by a lack of planning and proper communicatio, which is what’s happening here.

Cuts to NOAA and not enough manpower to provide accurate, up-to-date forecasts is a real concern.
