Trump signs order to shift disaster preparations from Fema to state and local governments

Rob Moore, the director of the flooding solutions team at the Natural Resources Defense Council, accused the Trump administration of systematically weakening US disaster readiness.

“From day one, the Trump administration has been eroding the nation’s capacity to plan for, respond to, and recover from disasters,” Moore told Reuters.

“They’ve overseen the dismissal of 1,000 Fema staff – who won’t be there to respond to a flood or wildfire – and are withholding funding from local and state governments who are doing risk reduction projects and more.“

Shana Udvardy, a senior researcher at the Union of Concerned Scientists, said she was concerned the order marked “another dangerous step” that would leave communities with fewer resources to prepare for future disasters.

God help us in the disaster probe areas, because our worthless President just passed the buck. He won't be there tossing toilet paper like in Puerto Rico, but will send his thoughts and prayers throughout the season from one of his golf courses.

They weren't helping the majority of Americans anyways, they skipped houses with Trump signs...

It's time for a better org with a better system that isn't politically motivated.

Why does she need to? Do you feel threaten? Do you feel outnumbered? She has her freedom of speech just like everyone else on here.

For someone who didn't vote, you sure like to be one sided.

Threatened? Why would I be? All she does is cry about Trump. It's old.

I'm not one sided at all. If I was I would have voted.

Hurricane season is 3 months away!

Trump wants states to handle disasters without FEMA. They say they can’t.

The federal agency’s role is irreplaceable, emergency managers say.

Get Rid of FEMA? Some States Will Hurt More Than Others.

Data from Carnegie’s Disaster Dollar Database shows that states in the Gulf and mid-Atlantic would be most affected if the federal government steps back from disaster recovery.

If the administration makes good on its promise to rapidly defund the federal disaster system, states such as Louisiana, Florida, and Texas will be at the front lines of the transition to a bleak post-disaster future.

Trump’s plan to dismantle FEMA meets Republican resistance

President Donald Trump suggested shutting down the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), but Republican lawmakers, facing mounting disaster costs in their states, pushed back, arguing for reforms instead of elimination.

“FEMA can’t go away. I think the first job of the federal government is to protect people and property.”

    — Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.)

So because of it getting tiring and old, she should stop?

If a sport franchise keep losing and losing, fans should shut up and take it up the rear end? No changes need to be made? Or if the owner or GM did something outrageously stupid, fans should shut up and accept it?

Had trump made the Luka doncic trade, y'all probably would think it was a good trade.

The public expectations for disaster response and what will now actually happen are leagues apart. You are on your own. At least, you better plan for such and if any help does come, consider it good fortune. That goes double for recovery. (If you live in a hurricane or fire or flood or earthquake zone, you should be hyper-vigilant about paying attention to warnings right now.)

Of course, the reason FEMA was created is because states used to have all the responsibility but it became abundantly clear in the 1970s that this was a failing model. Now we are back there again with even more intense and frequent disasters.

Yes, FEMA needs reform (for one, there's still too many legacy Cold War civil defense bits hanging around) as does our whole national/state/local approach to emergency management, but this is not the way. We should be reforming all this deliberately and dispassionately with a clear understanding of climate change and a goal of protecting communities by anticipating, planning, preparing, responding, and recovering for/from disasters. This is definitely not that.

Also, I've trained folks in Texas, including Panhandle practitioners who have been going through it lately. Good people for the most part, but they will not perform on a large-scale, long-term, complex disaster better than any other state--and if you have cascading disasters, the systems will break. I remember sitting in on a call after Katrina and before Rita. FEMA was tapped out and the worst was feared from Rita. Texas officials on the call were begging for all the national and state help available, which wasn't much at the time. This will likely become the norm but before you can beg for help you must first pay homage to the guy in the White House who will decide on a whim whether you get any help at all and whatever is offered will likely come with conditions.

Also, without a federal backstop, states will be less likely to send their folks to go help out another state because of the chance of a disaster happening there. We already see this with wildland fire--states keeping their resources at home for fear of being slammed should something happen while the state is not at full strength even as other states burn.
