agreed....New Orleeens is one of my favorite cities to party in...they have got to get off their collective asses and get something done....or my kid will never have the opportunity to find out how much fun it can be. btw....didnt see this posted...but this site has got some of the coolest sat pics of the storms.. http://www.nnvl.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/in...y=Year 2004 Storm Events&event=Hurricane Ivan
I saw yesterday that the leftovers of Ivan are going over Florida and are about to go into the Gulf, any predictions?
Probably too soon to tell. There's a lot of shear in the Gulf at the moment. It is possible that it could re-strengthen into some form of tropical disturbance. There looks to be a front coming through toward the end of the week and weekend that will probably pick up anything like that and move it out of here once and for all. We'll just have to keep an eye on it for the moment, but I'd be surprised if it reached hurricane strength again.
Check out this loop. Kind of reminds me of where Alicia started. I'm sure alot of you remember Alicia.
There is a significant difference in the state of the atmosphere. There is quite a lot of wind shear over the gulf which is why we have had fewer storms in the western part of it. I'd say it is a pretty good bet that we will get wet out of this one, but no one is predicting Ivan will get back to hurricane strength.
Thanks Jeff, here is another question, if this could turn into an Tropical Storm, would it be Ivan again?
that's an interesting question. i don't think so. but that's just my best guess. i don't know for sure.
It would likely be called Nicole. Jeff, you remember the atmospheric conditions at the time Alicia formed? How old are you? You can definately see that the amount of shear in the southeastern gulf is crazy. The tops of the thunderstorms are just flying off. I do think that if it continues to move west though, we could see something develop.
I thought that Channel 13 (ABC Houston) said that it would pick up the Ivan name if it reformed. Searching for more info right now..................
Not that old. I was 14 when Alicia hit. But, I do know that the weather pattern we have right now is extremely un-favorable for development of storms. I remember that, at the time of Alicia, we were having REALLY hot weather with almost no breeze - I remember this because my father has reminded me and because our electricity was out for 2 weeks and it was hot in that freakin' house. We have such a different patttern this year in terms of teperatures. I still think it might make TS strength, but I'd be really surprised if it made it into a hurricane. Thing is, this isn't even the entire remnants of Ivan. This is just a part of what was Ivan. So, it isn't nearly as strong or as large.
The only reason I brought up Alicia was because the locations are almost exactly the same. It also has been moving almost due west for over a day now. It was between Kingston and Miami over a day ago. You are right though most of what was Ivan zipped off to the northeast days ago. That's the thing I have the most problem with. The media is just going to latch onto this as being Ivan reborn. Anything to get people to watch with the media these days. :/
Seems they've upgraded it to a tropical depression and guess what they're calling it? Ivan Still there is so much shear in the gulf that I doubt this thing is stronger than a weak tropical storm at landfall. NRL jumping the gun?
